Best points?

I am new to all of this and I am already guessing there is no real answer to this question but I have to ask!
What are the best type of points to get? I am looking mostly at RCI right now but I see a lot of Wyndham points timeshares for sale as well. Of course I have seen other point systems as well. I think there are ways to use one set of points in another system but exactly how seems to be a well guarded secret!
So for someone starting out, what are the best type of points? Or is it all about the same in the end?

I always recommended the simplest approach to new buyers..

Start by making a list of the places you want to travel to in the next ten years.. Then add the placed you've been in the last five!

Now- you simply look at the individual resort systems to determine which developers offer resort locations that best match your list.

Then you can research that system to understand any restrictions on resale buyers, market price and trends, and the closing process.. This website is a great asset for you to learn more about individual systems as well as exchange opportunities.

The most important thing is simply to take your time and learn as much as possible before you purchase.

I totally agree. It's most important to buy into a system where there are resorts you want to use. Otherwise, the points won't be of any benefit to you. Once you've narrowed down your list to a few possibilities, come back and ask questions of those of us who own in each of the systems. You also want to look at annual maintenance fees and consider travel costs for each of your anticipated destinations. Be an informed buyer. Resales may be cheap - but if you can't use the system, it's wasted money and you'll likely be stuck with something you can't use.

We've decided that a points based timeshare is ideal for us, so we'll be studying each system carefully, starting with Wyndham. We would like to own at OrangeLake, but the HICV only has 5 TS resorts affiliated, 3 of which I may never go to. We definitely would want more options than that.
