  • Presidential Villas at Plantation Resort Weeks to Points

We own a 3 bedroom unit in a summer red week on odd years at Presidential Villas at Plantation Resort. In the past (a few years back) we could split up our one ownership year into two years, one year of these years would be a two bedroom and one of them would be a one bedroom. In the past, we could trade the one bedroom unit way up at another resort through RCI and get a two bedroom unit, now we cannot do this. So is transferring to RCI Points a good idea?

By the way, we are actually having a hard time getting any resorts traded on RCI.com even if they are two bedroom units, it's really hard to find anything at all even if we look in advance with our maximum trading power (18 points on 2 bedroom and 13 points on 1 bedroom). What should we do about this? Are there any specific advantages to having RCI Points? Are there any fees involved in this transfer?

Does anyone have any experience in this matter? The marketing department at Plantation Resort is supposed to call back soon with additional information.

You must not have reserved a very good summer week. You need to make your reservations as early as you can. If you had reserved week 27 (July 4th) you could have gotten 56 tpu's for the 2 bedroom and 40 tpu's for the hotel portion. Week 30 (non holiday but July summer week) gets 46 tpu's for the 2 bedroom and 30 tpu's for the hotel portion. Don't let the resort pick which weeks to deposit for you.

You would get decent amount of points in RCI points and it would come automatically without having to reserve anything but most resorts charge $2000-$4000 to convert you (not worth it) and your summer week is probably worth more in weeks then in points.

One of two things is going on

My 1st guess is that you didn't deposit this over 276 days before it's start date.
You should be depositing this at least a year in advance to get the maximum points.

2nd guess is is either a late spring week (20-25) or a Fall week (35-40) and not a true summer week.

The call from the resort to switch to RCI points is going to be in the $2500-$4000 range, absolutely ridiculous, and it isn't going to help you as the week isn't worth any more in points than in is in weeks.

Having the resort convert your unit to points, is way too expensive IMO. It would cost you $2K-4K. You can get essentially the same equivilent unit already converted for less than $100 on eBay right now. [I think I saw one go a couple days ago for not much more than $1, with closing and fees the total cost would have been <$500.] So if I was in your situation and wanted to go with points, I think I'd get rid of the current 3BR and look for a converted unit of similar size on eBay -- it would still be a lot cheaper in the long run. There are fees with using points, but they are generally less than the weeks fees, for exchanges made online.

A 3BR Presidential Villas red week [12(8)] returns about 104500 points at Plantation Resort unit. That's a nice amount of points for your ~$650 or so MF. [But you can get similar or even slightly better MF/points ratio at some of the FL, NV or AZ resorts.] It's hard to describe what you can get for that, there are just too many variables involved and personal factors heavily influence things. [I'm not sure you'd get access to much more than you already have but aren't interested in(?), except for the points resorts.] However, I am concerned that you might still have problems finding something even if you had points, so read on.

The 3 BR Lockout you already have has a lot of potential for trading on the weeks side. Many TUGGERS used that unit as a "Tiger Trader" before the recent RCI weeks changes -- they could see and get a lot with it. So I'm not sure what you are doing wrong or when/how you are doing your planning. My fear is that you might have the same problem even if you had points. In many ways I feel you need to have a strategy and plan when using TS, and that is especially importantt on the points side of things.

Thanks everyone for your help, it's nice to have someone give you advice that isn't trying to sell you something.

I'm pretty sure it would help to look and deposit earlier than we are, but I will say that we are getting 100% of the trading power available on our deposits, we have asked about this. Right now we are in the process of finding a timeshare trade anywhere on the eastern US coast, it is nearly impossible to find a exchange for this (and trading power isn't really an issue because there aren't any available on any amount of trading power). We starting looking for an exchange in about July of this year, this is about a year in advance, and we have found nothing. I'm just wondering if anyone is having good luck with RCI, it's just strange that before they had a website we could call and get pretty much anything we wanted (we didn't go to very many places, but the places we got were nice, mostly good crown results) and now we can't find anything that we want really.

Does anyone suggest doing something completely different timeshare-wise? Do you think it is even worth owning your own timeshare as opposed to bidding on eBay every year or something like that? In the past, we have been traveling with younger children but now that the children are older we don't want to go to the same place every year as much, maybe travel to more urban places (we already live a rural area) and RCI is suited more for Disney World type vacations so possibly could get more value for our money with something else, any ideas?
