First, join all the other exchange companies with free membership like DAE, TPI, PI, and SFX (if your resort meets their rather strict requirements), and possibly one with cheap membership, HTSE, and get to know their systems. Several of them have request first systems, so you can put in requests without putting up a deposit first.
I use DAE primarily, and have just joined SFX. I had been keeping one week at a time in RCI, but with their coming ''Points-lite'' change to Weeks, I am not going to even give them that any more.
So what your saying is when I get my new points for the year I:
1) call my resort and tell them to deposit with someone else
2)I don't renew my RCI membership by paying the fees
or can I pull my points mid year and put them elsewhere?
Your underlying week of ownership can be deposited with one of the independent trade companies. Once you have RCI involved, you are stuck until you drop your points membership.
Fwiw,

What kind of points do you own? RCI Points, Club Wyndham, Bluegreen, DVC, HGVC, Diamond... there are many others too. Some are affiliated with more than one exchange company. Some are pure UDI points and some are tied to an underlying resort week. If you have a deeded week with your points, you may be able to deposit that week with anyone you choose. It all depends on what you own.
Points are a different animal than regular timeshare.
If it is RCI Points tied to a specific week, then opt out for the next availble year, as if you are using the week yourself, then give it to an independent.
Some points programs like Seasons, you can just assign the points themselves to an independent exchange company. Others like DRI are real grinches and simply make you use their system or their chosen exchange company. I would avoid like the plague owning in a system like the latter.
No, what you can do is to reserve your week like you are going to use it yourself. Then once the week is in your control, give it to the independent exchange company. Check with the independent exchange company you want to use. This should work.
And of course, every three years, you have an opportunity to get out of RCI Points.
as the confirmation will come from RCI just like an exchange. Now if you can get your resort to confirm a week directly, then you can deposit it elsewhere, however most won't saying that RCI has control of your week.
