And the industry appears to be oblivious, choose to ignore, or straight-out lie about these facts.

Even if the timeshare concept itself was not suspect, which it is to the majority of people, the way the industry chooses to deal with reality tips the scale against them.

      since someone asked . . .

      craigslist

      google

and even Hotwire, where you can now shop for a condo (you can't yet on Priceline). I recently got DW and her girlfriends two 1-night stays at two different condos (Tampa and Orlando) for $70-ish. One is a timeshare.

What kind of owners priviledges are we talking about here?

If you trade you LSE, and if you rent you gain... Gain what exactly?

I noticed in an early response, somebody said that you won't get an ocean view if you are a trader...

        That sucks!

Many resorts discriminate between exchangers and owners. Some resorts charge additional fees for exchangers, and various other differences. For example, at HGVC West 57th Street timeshare in Manhattan, owners get free breakfast every morning in the owner's lounge whereas exchangers are charged $25 /pp if they want the breakfast. Some resorts offer discounts for owners, etc. in their stores.

Getting an ocean view or not on an exchange depends on the resort. Almost every resort I have exchanged into has let me choose the unit location at check-in depending on availability.

At some resorts owners get stuff that exchangers don't, or get them at a lower price.

              Golf
              Cabanas
              bicycles
              food
you know, stuff resorts can gouge exchangers for that owners would bitch about if they had to pay (or pay more)

Low is in the eyes of the beholder. Any more $500 is low.

Trades well is in the eyes of the beholder, too. If it gets what you want it is good enough. If it doesn't, it isn't.

Most owners of good traders with low fees have the common sense not to talk about it (not me).

That will definetly be an advantage for a family!

                  Great little trick...

Could save you enough money to pay for the stay!?? Maybe...

                  WHAT OTHER RESORTS OFFER THAT?

One example... I own a week at a popular resort in Kona. Exchangers are generally given first floor units, owners get first dibs on the upstairs. Last year I rented my week for my MFs to a very happy renter who was given a top floor unit since he was able to enjoy my privileges (and I put in the request for him).

It is no big deal because you can buy a good breakfast across the street for less than $7.00. It is impossible to list what each resort offers. There are thousands of resorts.

When I plan our trips, my wife and I decide where we want to go and then look for the best accommodations whether it be a timeshare or hotel. We choose whatever suits our plans for that trip.

Well that would be a prime example. If you rent an owners week that is assigned an ocean view-then you will get that ocean view.

Some properties may give owners free wi-fi, parking, other things like pool privledges at other properties. Exchangers won't necessarily receive these things unless they pay for them.

Disney Vacation Club is a good example already mentioned. Exchange in and there is a 95.00 mandatory fee. Owners don't pay this.
