  • Trades into Grand Canyon Area

We are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon for next year and would appreciate any input into good RCI Weeks or II units we should look to trade into, or ones we should avoid. We would want to be within about an hour from the GC. Which area of the canyon we go to would probably depend on where we trade into.

Also, we are looking into Bryce Canyon in Utah. Has anyone ever been here?

    Thanks in advance! - Robo

The only timeshare I'm aware of an hour or less from the Grand Canyon would be the Fairfield Flagstaff. One of our members stayed there in May and posted pictures of the unit he stayed at.

Sedona is an hour further away and offers a LOT more options for both RCI and Interval resorts.

When are you looking to go and how large a unit will you need?

We're going mid-June 2007 and will only need a one bedroom (2 adults a 9 year old). Two bedroom would be nice but not essential.

        June in Grand Canyon Area

We have stayed in both Sedona and Flagstaff and enjoyed both. I would point out that Sedona in summer is quite hot, while Flagstaff is a bit cooler due to its higher elevation.

We were in Sedona in early May 2005, and temperatures were above 90 every day. However, if you can face the heat, Sedona is very beautiful and there are several great resorts - we were in Arroyo Roble, and it was a really good unit.

          Not to Flagstaff you're not.

Here are the only units available with a strong trader. I really wouldn't delay if you see a week you can use.

I was at Fairfield Flagstaff this past May. I have some pictures posted on the photo server here.
We really liked FF Flagstaff. We had a 2BR with loft and the unit was great. I am not sure what the 1BR is like but there is a floor plan on the Fairfield Flagstaff Yahoo Group .You need to become a member of this Yahoo Group to get to it.

              Robo,
The Flagstaff Fairfield will be your closest resort to the South Rim of the GC...it is in a great spot for seeing lots of local and Sedona sights.

If you want the North Rim, you might consider Brian Head as a central point to launch from. You can get to Bryce, Zion, and the North Rim on day trips. The longest drive would be to the North Rim of the GC from Brian Head...about 3 hours. There is also a really lovely park called Cedar Breaks National Monument which is beautiful in its own right. Take a look: http://www.nps.gov/cebr/

If you just want the Grand Canyon, have you considered doing a trip to Sedona, and adding a couple of days in the beginning or end of your trip to visit the GC...you can stay in the South Rim or just outside in the town of Tusayan...and it can be very affordable, relaxing and gives you time to really soak up some of the great beauty of Northern Arizona.

Sedona is a great launching pad, if you don't mind driving about 2 1/2 hrs to the South Rim. They also have lots of tour companies that take you up there, or to Canyon de Chelley or Hopi Village. June is hot in Arizona, no matter where you decide to land....Flagstaff is definitely a bit cooler by about 10 or 15 degrees, which can be a lot, but the higher elevation means stronger sun, feels pretty intense.

Let me know if you have more questions!

Like I said previously Fairfield Flagstaff is a great resort, the units (at least the one we were in) are great and it is close to the canyon, but, if you do stay there make sure you also do some side trips down to Sedona, it's not far and the scenery there is beautiful. The red rocks and the buttes, etc are not to be missed. Whatever you choose to do I would follow Lawrens advice and book something as soon as you see it availalbe, they won't last long.
Have a great time the area is well worth visiting, even tho we have only been there once we will go back again.

                  Sedona .......

When we were there, we stayed at Los Abrigados ~ beautiful resort in a beautiful area. Have you thought about the Grand Canyon Railway? It departs from Williams, a cute little town within an hours drive. You'll have 3 hours at the Canyon as I recall ~ might be an option. The train is a fun ride, (we met lots of nice people), and your 9 year old might really enjoy it.

                  Have a great trip!!
