  • RCI cancelled our EV - 3 weeks before vacation - RCI Overbooking

    My husband and I always wanted to go to Hawaii. We could never find the perfect time with our jobs, money, time, etc.
    Finally, 5 months ago, On July 31st we found and booked one week in Oahu and 2 days later, we found another week at the same resort - we were able to book our resort through rci.com for our wedding anniversary for 2 weeks in the same resort. We did 2 separate reservations. We received the emails with confirmations and everything seemed right. We were so happy!

    A few days later, I was checking my account at RCI.com and I was not able to find my vacation at the confirmed section. As I am an RCI member for years now, I knew something was wrong. I decided to write an email to RCI, I had a strange feeling. Case number: 6294487 - No answer

    I used the live chat and the assistant said everything was fine. He could see the reservations, even though we could not - and he said it was a glitch in the system. He told me to call the rci specialists. So I did. I called them, and they told me the same: everything is perfect, don't worry. They confirmed my reservation number.

    One month after, I tried to see if the system glitch was fixed. As this trip is so special to us, I kept checking. So I decided to call again. They told us the same thing. Your vacation has been confirmed, you don't need to worry. I even received an email with this link: http://view.ed4.net/v/2OVUI5/JIDI61/...ION=1&FORMAT=H

    One day, searching on RCI.com, I saw my 2 weeks vacation on the "ongoing search" section. I called RCI again and they said it was a mistake, and again confirmed - everything is fine. I used the live chat just to double check and same thing again.

    Ok, so with everything fine, I finally bought my flight tickets, rented the car and booked my activities, buying the Oahu fun card, some groupons offers, etc.

    A month later, I called the resort to double check. They said I should try to call them again one month before my trip.

    Ok, so December came, and yesterday, 1 month before my vacation I call the resort again to check on my reservation. They said "we've already received all the lists from RCI until Feb 08th and your name is not in the list" - I freaked out. I called RCI once again, probably the 10th time and they said everything is fine with our system, we will just fax it over to the resort. Then, she asked me if I could hold on. After holding for a few minutes, she said, I will transfer you to a supervisor, there is an issue with your booking. I was in shock. After so many calls, live chats, emails attempts, now this!

    The supervisor came and said: "Your reservation was fine in one of our system, but not in the other - we can't confirm your reservation with the resort you chose" - this is after 5 months of calls. I explained to them everything I'm explaining here. They offered to help me to find another resort and also to return my points and money. But I don't want them back. I want my resort weeks in the exact days I chose them. Now, with less than a month to my trip, they tell me I need to wait 4 more days. The supervisor is nice, she said she will try her best, but I wanted to know if anyone had this experience before.

    In Hawaii, RCI doesn't have many resorts, and it is such a short time to find 2 straight weeks. Please share advices. RCI can't do that - again, my flight tickets are bought, my car is rented and activities scheduled

    RCI has specialists that deal with this. Be insistent without being overly rude. There are actually quite a few RCI resorts on Oahu. I agree that two weeks at the same resort sound like a tall order, but if I were you I'd be happy to move somewhere else after the first week, maybe even to a different island. I realize that's not what you planned.

    Question: you say it was an EV but you talk about points and ongoing search. Are these Exchanges or Extra Vacations?

      Got one cancelled after being assured by a Guide that if it was confirmed it would be OK, & . . .

      We were also asked to give up two units for the overbooking fiasco at Weston in January after hurricanes a few years back. It was a very good offer of alternate (as good as) accomodations in the same area, plus two free exchanges. We were asked to give back two 1-bedroom units and get one 2-bedroom unit. But, by the time we were able to reach the person who called us (actually we got the lady at the next desk), it had been resolved.

      We missed the call because we were at Orange Lake and never answer the room phone there, it normally ringing for only one reason. I picked up voice mail the morning we checked out, the day after the call, and RCI was wanting the units we were checking into that afternoon.

        RCI and Wyndham are in common ownership, so that makes this even more startling.

        Maybe the needed your weeks for their business of renting exchange deposits to non-members.

              I would not mind if they move us from one resort to another after the first week. At this point, I just want to have a resort there. Do you know anything about Points Partners? They mentioned they would also try that. Did you ever experienced in this forum people that lost their vacation because RCI could not find any resort to accomodate them? At RCI.com, there are no resorts available for January anymore. It needs to be Oahu because of my activities, flight tickets and car rental for 14 days.

              Thank you JLB. My concern is to find a resort on the dates I am in there. At least it looks like they always try their best, right? I live close to Weston, like 40 minutes by the way

              Thank you Carolinian! I think this is actually good news. The resort I booked is the one I wanted to be. I hope they can find a way of giving me my reservations back...

              RCI sucks. And this relatively recent cancellation thing should continue to prove that.
              I will keep you informed.

              Does any one else in this forum had experiences similar to mine and JLB? If so, please tell me how did it end? Thank you!

                Yes, there are people here who have had similar experiences. There was a rash of them in Mexico a while back, and some others here and there. Sometimes attributed to things outside RCI's control (resort flooding, maintenance issues) and others "overbooking," which is what happened at the Mayan resorts like the plague for a while.

                I think the fact that it's Wyndham is helpful. Don't go by what's online available for exchange inventory-wise. RCI has access to last minute cancellation inventory, and they have "specialists" to handle these types of situations. It totally sucks for you, but in my years on this forum, it seems as though more of these situations get resolved satisfactorily than not. No guarantees, and I would urge you to put a Plan B in place. Take a look at the independent exchange companies for Hawaii. I also suggest that in addition to the phone, you write to RCI customer service so you can keep a record of what unfolds.

                  That is terrible !!

                  I have seen in the past couple of days that on Dial an exchange ( www. daelive.com ) that there are a bunch of efficiency Wyndhams (same location that you had reserved) available on Oahu for rent/bonus week. In order to rent a bonus week, you need to join DAElive, but there isn't any cost. When the time gets short (30 days?) they drop the price considerably. Take a look and consider this as your "plan B".

                  It seems to me that RCI has a responsibility of working this our to your satisfaction. I'm not an attorney, but IMHO they seem to have a responsibility for "specific performance" on their contract with you.

                    This has happened to me very recently......In the end, RCI did work out something to my satisfaction, and I'm hoping that they do the same for you.

                      Im writing to them since the beginning. I will ask them about Wyndham ownership and how this can benefit us?

                        I had a similar situation happen for a summer week on the Outer Banks. Ended up at a better resort with a unit that was oceanfront so I can't complain.

                          wow, I'm expecting the same )! I saw they have an RCI resort with available units through expedia for the dates I need. It is a 5 star resort though. I will keep you posted. Thanks for sharing this with me!

                            It will be interesting to see if they pull something out of their rental pool (most of which were originally exchange deposits in spite of what they may try to tell you) to make something right on an exchange they botched. Make sure you point those weeks out to them.

                              The supervisor said she would call me on the 4th, friday (because of the holidays). Do you think I should call her before? My trip is scheduled for the 25th... When I try to speak with other representatives, it seems like there are some notes in the system, therefore nobody can talk to me, but her. She seems like a good professional. Should I put some pressure? :S
