I have a week on hold on RCI. It says $199 exchange fee and $77.62 in tax. I don't remember paying tax on an exchange. Is this new? Weird!

Are you Canadian? I have seen on the disclosure guide that taxes can be added on for Canandian members. There have regularly been areas that charge tax on Last call rentals (like Williamsburg) but have not heard of them taxing exchanges. Maybe they are extending tax on exchanges to those areas as well.

Half Canadian by lineage, but full American by birthplace.
I doubt that RCI knows.

Did a Florida Vistana Beach Club thru RCI weeks and a DVC thru the Bluegreen Portal Points. $199/$159 as usual.

Hey Muriel,
How are you doing?
I think you may have hit on something here. This was available as an extra vacation or an exchange. So perhaps the tax was on the extra vacation. I went into the hold to take a look at it, and all it says is $199 exchange fee is due. So all is good. Phew!
Originally posted by marcmuff View PostI didn't pay tax on exchanges either, but I was surprised to see a tax imposed on an extra vacation I purchased at the same resort I exchanged into. Maybe RCI mistook it for an extra vacation or rental?

Taxes are charged by other exchange companies and by some resort ownerships where they are applicable.
I know WorldMark will charge the tax at booking where it exists, while Wyndham will not for the same property. I assume people are charged at check-out with out prior warning.
Shell advises of taxes that will be charged at the resort. Platinum Interchange made me pay the Orange County CA tax at time of booking for my last exchange through them.
I have been charged taxes at resorts when I have exchanged in the past through RCI without being informed at booking or on the confirmation. If this is a step to prevent "sticker shock" at check-out I'm all for it. Some taxes are very high, >$100/week. It should be done this way where local taxes (TOT) are collected.Lawren
