Many of my good friends own resorts on Sipadan Island where those kidnappings took place....too bad....one of the best dive spots in the area. I spent a lot of time in Indonesia and Malaysia before 911 and am glad I did....I would not feel safe in Indonesia at all....not even Bali....Malaysia would be ok but would be careful.
I think I would stick with China, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, ROC, Japan, and the Pacific Islands if I went back to the area.
I love Asia....and the Philippines is a great country with great people.....just unstable and subject to danger in the south.
