  • Anyone ever cancel RCI exchange & not lose fee?

I've got a sticky problem. I've got an exchange into a beach resort and just got a letter from RCI saying the resort is going to be doing major rebuilding of their beach with heavy equipment, right when I'm supposed to be there. RCI says we can cancel but their normal cancellation policy applies. I don't think that's fair at all, since the beach is really the only thing I'm going for, and it's the only thing for miles around. It's not a shopping, dining or clubbing mecca in other words. Also because of my bum right eye I don't like to drive if I don't have to, and I don't want to be forced to drive to another beach just for some peace and quiet.

Has anyone ever had any luck getting RCI to waive the loss of the exchange fee when cancelling an exchange?

    YES!

I only had to do it once. I had booked Arroyo Roble for the week BEFORE our spring break. They gave me the week after at Sunterra with no cancellation fee.

Of course the AR week was gone in seconds and my call was made nearly a year out.

Yes, but it was a pleasant surprise.

They met me half way on a wrong date booked in Gurneys. I lost half and still had to pay another exchange fee for the right date.

Under these circumstances, I think they should waive there usual cancellation fee. Maybe try and bump it up to a 'higher' level of Customer Service?

Just out of curiosity which resort? Have you contacted the resort to find out how the construction impacts the guests at the resort? Sound like the Urgent Info from Pono Kai. If it is the Pono kai the construction is supposed to be over with. I did a week in St. Augustine while the were drudging the beaches. It was horrible smelled like a porta potty.

I had cancelled Smugglers Notch because I had booked it before they started the extra fees and I cancelled it based on that. They had no problems refunding my exchange fee and this was 4 months after the exchange was originally made.

IMHO I don't see where RCI has any responsibility if, after the exchange was made, the resort scheduled a beach reconstruction. RCI has no control over the individual resort and in fact went a step further than necessary by notifying you so that you could cancel if you wanted to. The fact that exchanges can be made a couple of years out makes it impossible for RCI or anybody else to foretell what unseen circumstances can occur. Last year most of the resorts in Cancun lost their beaches and were closed for a spell. If you had an exchange into this area at that time you were out of luck.

I had an exchange into NOLA at the Pierre Lafitte Maison for last month. I made the exchange in early Aug 2005 (i.e., pre-Katrina). RCI called us in early June 2006 to say the PLM was still closed and RCI could put us into the Quarter House instead for the same week (no room upgrade though). Of course we took it. And had a great time living in the Quarter!

RCI waived the cancellation fee at Fairfield nashville when my fathe died.
I rebooked that week, and the resort was closed by a hurricane. Then I extended the week, and got a crummy unit. so that week had really bad karma.

                      Hi Carol,

First off, if you havent tried this yet, try it. Call in to RCI and tell them how you feel about it. If the vacation guide doesnt seem willing to do anything about it, then ask to speak to a supervisor. They will help you. Im not saying they will do anything about it, but if your history is good with RCI and you dont cancel alot past the grace period and have never been given an exception, then they will do it for ya, I gaurentee it.

The reason why they send a letter that states the standard policy applies is because they deal with every situation individually. Dont worry, as long as your in good standing with them, they work with ya. I have a good feeling for ya since I have am employed with an exchange company.

Let me know how you make out.
