Thank you Everyone for the information, it was very heplful. We are planning the trip for late September, mid-October. We plan on renting a mobile home for the trip. The trip will be two weeks long. We will be going to Yellowstone park and definetly going to check out the sights on Beartooth highway. Then on to Washington state to visit my cousin and on back to California. I am planning on putting my vacation time in now for the trip. I'm crossing my fingers for luck that my request for time off will be granted, during that time frame.

The Beartooth Highway
This Road closes each winter because of excessive snow and adverse winter conditions and re-opens in May of each year. The section of US Highway 212 from its intersection with the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, (WY 296) to Cooke City and into the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park is usually open to traffic during the first 10 days in May. The entire highway from Red Lodge over the Beartooth Plateau and on to Cooke City has its official opening each year on the Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend and remains open until mid-October as snow conditions allow. It is not uncommon to experience blizzard type conditions both in the spring and the fall, especially at higher elevations.

Or stay in a resort and drive the 20 miles , 30 min drive to be in to the park. I have never been there. I don't know what's around Yellowstone park area to see and do, besides seeing Yellowstone park.
And for things to do in Yellowstone, you could start with this site:
