What is your exchange strategy when dealing with the independent? With RCI, II and SFX, I have deposited first. When looking at using some of the other independents, do you deposit first, or do you look and when you see something, then deposit and hope it is still there when your deposit gets confirmed?

So far, I haven't used any independents, but I'm wondering about this, too.
Over on TUG, I asked people what they thought of doing Search First using the same underlying week in two different exchange companies. It's unlikely that both companies would match you on the same day, and even if they did, you could probably cancel one exchange, although you might lose your exchange fee.

Eric,
I am trying both ways with the independents.
I have already used PSE several times but that is more of an in-house exchange than an independent. That was a call first, 10 months out and if it's there I just switch weeks. I plan to use PSE for 2008 again.
Trading Places manages one of my resorts. Being entirely fed up with the lack of exchange availability to places/times that I desire with RCI, I deposited that resort week with them last summer. With the deposit I got a bonus week.
Studying TPI I know they can get me hawaii, SCal or Yellowstone for my timeframes with enough lead time. If at 10months I can't get what I need with PSE, TPI will get that week as well.
I have joined DAE <it's free> and I do have a non-deposit, search first in with them. No results as of yet.
I think a lot of independent exchange company use has to be well thought out to be successful. TPI will work for me as SCal and Hawaii and Yellowstone are all on my list for the upcoming years.
My lead time into TPI is long because of my RCI mindset of scheduling vacations 18months to 2 years in advance otherwise I'm sure I would have positive news to report.
ETA: Judy I believe that you do get a chance to accept what you are offered prior to commitment.Lawren
