We have had Interval International for 4 years and have only been able to make one exchange. They are always booked and i have even tried a year in advance. Is RCI any better or what about the REDWEEk Exchange which is new I think and works on points? Our timeshare is in Maui and we thought we would have no problem exchanging?? ANy suggestions. We do not plan to renew with Interval.

You might also try several of the independent exchange companies, most or all of which I suspect would take your resort as a deposit. Many have no annual membership fee, and the exchange fees are less than RCI or II.
Try:
htse.net
Dial An Exchange Timeshare + Vacation Ownership & Points Clubs Exchange Service
Trading Places International - Timeshare Rentals, Exchange, Resales, and Travel Services
SFX Preferred Resorts the San Francisco exchange company

I feel so stupid on this exchanging thing. I had no idea there were so many other exchange companies. My place is at Kahana Sands in Maui and they made us think that we had to only exchange with Interval. You mean I can go to these other companies ( after I have gotten a week at my place) and try to exchange with them if they have what I want. Do I not have to worry that I may show up to the resort and not have a room? See I told you I am so stupid about this

Where do you want to go? If you want St. John at the Westin, there are many people wanting to go there.
If you want Aruba, you should be able to get it, if you request at least a year in advance, although Aruba isn't that hard to get if you are flexible.
It really depends on what you are wanting.
We personally think Interval is a great exchange company, and we have used both RCI and Interval for many years--RCI for 22 years and II for 26 years.

I have tried so many places and have been flexible I thought. In Mexicoa I gave Interval probably 10 resorts and could not get in. I was deposting my week first or is it called banking my week with Interval then would try to get a place. We have been told that was the wrong thing to do. We should get a week at Sands of Kahana and then tell them I have this week and would like to exchange it for ------(whatever). So you are saying that Interval is a good company and people are getting what they want alot. Or do you thing the independant companies are better. We are trying to decide whether to renew with Interval or not.

II may not be the correct company for Mexico
Where and when were you wanting to travel? and how far in advance are you trying to make plans?
Is your SOK a 1,2 or 3 bedroom?
Several of the independent companies like Trading Places or San Francisco Exchange have pretty good availablity in Mexico.
Once I have these answers, I may be able to give you some additional guidance.

i am not so concerned at this moment on the resort but what company to go with on exchanging on timeshare. I feel like I am confused. Say I pay to belong to Interval International, you say I can also belong to RcI yet also check these indepedent places ? I guess we were under the assumption you could only belong to one? We are just trying to figure out how work this whole thing.

OK, take a deep breath
In order to pick the correct company for you, we really need to know where and when you expect to travel and how far in advance you normally make your vacation plans.

So you are just now thinking about a June 2008 trade
Well, you really should be making your SOK reservations at the earliest that they allow.
If it is a 1 bedroom, Feb-through Easter with be the time period you would want to book.
If it is a 2 bedroom then the summer months will be the best.
Now, if timesharing is going to work for you, planning at least 12 months in advance is almost mandatory.
So a request for the Caribbean for early next June should have been started by the last day of May.
If these planning requirements aren't going to work for you, you might think about selling your unit, and just renting where you want to travel.
I am not being mean, these are just the facts. 1st in line gets the nice trades.
I make many of our reservations 18-24 months in advance, and if there is a possibility that something may come up to interfere, I take out travel insurance .
I wish you the best, and hope you get to where you want to be..

okay I understand that I can pretty much not expect to get an exchage now for June. I understand that
Let me rephrase my question. Say someone has just bought a timeshare and they are trying to decide what company to go with to use for their exchange shat would you do? DO you go with one only or do most people use several?
I understand now that I MUST plan a year in advance NOW how do you know who do to go with?

You go with who can best fulfill what you want.
For European and other overseas travel, I pick DAE. since my membership dues in RCI are paid by my resort system, I use them for most anything else. BUT, I'm not too hard to please and generally travel offseason. They are large enuf that I can always find somewhere to go in the general timeframe I desire. This does not work for everyone.
You may end up belonging to several exchange systems and use each sporadically.

At the risk of repeating myself
There is no one company fits all answer
It all depends on where and when you want to go!!~!
Each company has it's strengths, and it's weakness.
With the SOK, you can use II, TPI. SFX, HTSE, DAE and REDWEEKS.
You can't use RCI as the SOK is not affilated with them.
If you want nice resorts in Mexico, SFX, TPI with fit the bill.
TPI currently has
Sea Palace - St Maarten, Netherlands
Dates: Jul 05, 2008 - Jul 12, 2008
Size: 1 Bedroom Sleeps 6
Occupancy: 6
HTSE has
Island Seas Resort Bahamas 5/28/2008 6/01/2008 2B/6
SFX doesn't have an online inventory, so you would need to become a member and request space.
Trading Places doesn't have a membership fee
SFX ( gold membership) doesn't have a memdership fee
HTSE charges $89 a year
redweeks has an Atlantis week for trade. There you can deposit your week and receive a point value, which you can spend plus cash if yours isn't worth as much.
You might want to check them out Timeshare Rentals, Timeshare Resales, Timeshare Ratings, and Timeshare Reviews - RedWeek.com
Like I said to start, it all depends upon where and when you want to travel.

Greg - your posts are very helpful! I didn't really realize that each company has its own 'area' that it has the most inventory with. I just got my first timeshare last year at Hacienda del Mar in Cabo san Lucas. So far I have only traded with SFX; and I started here because I only want to travel in gold crown/5star and I know that is the only inventory SFX has.
What other companies are reliable and have good inventory for Europe (Italy, France, Switzerland, etc.)? What about the South Pacific (Tahiti, Bora bora, etc.)? Again, I would only want 5 star....
Thanks!
Also, who has the best Hawaii and Caribbean?
