If you are going in summer, make sure you pay a flat weekly fee to get the air-conditioning. We didn't get it at the beginning then as it got hotter and hotter, we caved in and got the air a day or so later. We still had to pay the same fee as I recall. I recently visit the resort again and it looked just as nice as it was when we stayed there many years ago.
If you don't elect the air conditioning at check-in, but request it later, the fee is pro-rated for the number of days remaining in your exchange. You do NOT pay the weekly fee. I just double-checked on this policy when we went to KCR (our home resort) this past December.
Are the resort accomodations designed to be used without a/c? I actually prefer "natural" when in Hawaii but the units have to be designed to allow natural airflow. If anyone has been there recently and has an opinion on this, along with the energy charge, I'd be grateful.

Kona Coast is our home resort and we have only stayed in Phase II units. We usually do not opt for the air-conditioning since we prefer to enjoy the island breezes also. There are usually very cool breezes that come down off the mountain every evening. It gets a bit still at about dusk, but the breezes start soon thereafter. We usually get a second or third floor unit and leave the bedroom windows open (one side of the building) and the lanai sliding glass doors (on the other side of the building) and get great cross ventilation. Sometimes, it gets so cool that we have to shut the windows in the middle of the night or get a blanket. The unit can heat up a bit during the day, but if you are like us, you will be out exploring the island on most days. ou can even leave the windows open during a rainstorm, since there are very wide roof overhangs. We have been to Kona in Dec/Jan and in March with no air conditioning. We also went one summer and had to have the air conditioning turned on for that stay. Hope that helps.
I requested Nueva Vallarta for next January at 18 months out - not one contact from SFX - and no response to my 'comment update' - I am also feeling a bit nervous..see what II/RCI does to you
Just wanted to post that out of the blue, I received a call from SFX today with a confirmation of a 2BR unit at Grand Mayan for next January
Glad to hear that they're starting to fill 2009 requests. I'm waiting for mine. The dates are still more than a year away. I get my requests posted 18 months in advance. Last year they got my Hawaii request filled 15 months before the requested dates.
