  • Comparison of exchange companies.

I thought Pat's presentation of his experience with SFX was really well presented and interesting. Also have been pondering the "Pokemon theory " and thought my current exchange process would be interesting to compare and chronical as well.

I need a week in Hawaii to back up to a direct exchange for May 2008.

    1) SFX
In January, I had to cancel an exchange with SFX for a Feb Grand Mayan Los Cabos. This was gotten with a Island Park 4th of July week that was deposited 9 months out. I immediately put in a request for any island for the 2 week time period in May of 2008. Request submitted Jan 8, 2008. To date, only an email confirmation of the submittal.

    2) Trading Places

I submitted a request for oahu, Maui or Kauai for the same two weeks. I am using a low season Island Park Week. Request submitted 1/24/09. 1/25/08, offered wyndam Wakiki for the time rrequested. (Had choice of 2 weeks). Turned it down because I prefer not to be in Honolulu.

    3) DAE

I submitted a request on 1/25/08 for Oahu, Maui or Kauai for the same period. I am using a Texas hill country fall week deposited at the last minute. 1/26/08 offered a cliff club for august 2008. Turned down because it is the wrong time.

    4) II

I cancelled a sept Hanalei Bay week and used the replacement week to put in a search on 1/23/08. Saw the Harborside sighting & decided to add it to my request for Oahu, Maui or Kuai. Next morning I matched a 2 bedroom Harborside (Sweet). I then deposited my July 2008 IPV week on 1/28/08 and started the search again for Maui, Oahu or Kauai. Matched to Gardens of West Maui on 1/29/08. I will keep this week.

    5) RCI

I placed a sighting request on TUG earlier this month & then again yesterday to decide if I should deposit my Island Park July week with RCI.. The first time a Tugger could see Poipiu point for the dates I needed using a similar IPV week. Today another tugger could see the Makai Club with a similar IPV week. Either of these weeks would have been acceptable but unfortuneately after 3 attempts to deposit with RCI, it didn't happen so the week went to interval & I got an AC as well.

    6) HTSE

When I was trying to decide where to deposit my IPV, they did have a unit available at the imperial in HNL for my time period. Again, not what I was looking for.

Since I have an abundance of weeks, some of which will expire this year, I am going to leave the other searches running and will search last minute at RCI to try and use those weeks first and then cancel the Interval exchange if nothing else turns up.

I was concerned when I cancelled the Interval week for Hanalei Bay that the week would have no trade power. I do not know if it was a fluke that the power was not reevaluated prior to matching the Harborside or that the cancellation was far enough down the road that I retained trade power. THis is one of those Pokemon things. I would be interested in others experiences.

Very informative thread - especially with Island Park Village in II - I am thinking of canceling my RCI membership for a bit and depositing my week also.

FWIW, I have only had to cancel II exchanges 2 times and both times the weeks retained their original trading power.

I am thinking of dropping RCI as well. The only reason I have been keeping it is for Island Park. II will also give you an AC for summer IPV. Even some of the white weeks qualify for the AC.

I have done well in the past with my low & mid season IPV with II. THis is the first time since I first bought IPV that I have given II a summer week.

Even though IPV still gets great trades with RCI, their fees have just gotten too high and all the rental weeks really bother me.

I wanted/used RCI for European exchanges (which I believe I can now get with DAE based on the sightings posted here and they have no yearly fee) Manhattan Club (my kids live in Manhattan now) and some Caribbean stuff - The Crane maybe - but I own on Grand Cayman, St Thomas, Aruba, Barbados ...... and at this point my schedule is pretty full - I bought one week in Ireland .... and I really do enjoy staying at the Grand Mayan resorts that I can get thru SFX ..... soooooooooo, I am thinking it is time to say goodbye RCI.

I have my IPV weeks in my II account - and I do see some very nice stuff - and that is without an ongoing search ..... and every year I am offered an AC.

          Update

Tonight I got a call from SFX offering me a 1 bedroom at the Cliff Club for my required dates. Since Kauai/princeville is our first choice of islands and my deposit is due to expire in June, I accepted the week. I will loose my exchange fee with II but will still be able to use the week.

Time to fullfill the request was 30 days. Scarlett, the rep was very pleasant.

Also, the trade restrictions may have been dropped (90 day window).

No you do not lose your exchange fee with II unless you canceled a confirmed reservation If it was not confirmed you can request a refund

I am quite impressed that SFX worked with you and allowed you to cancel an exchange at less than 60 days and within less than a month find a suitable replacement for you. Did you have the cancellation insurance?

I was concerned when I cancelled the Interval week for Hanalei Bay that the week would have no trade power.
I have had to cancel twice. One was within less than 60 days. Both times the replacement week had the same trade power as the original deposit.

Why are you canceling - is the SFX offered resort nicer????

Sfx's cancellation policy is that you have to cancel more than 30 days out.

                    Pat

I am cancelling the Gardens at West Maui because the week at SFX will expire in July of this year. I realize that by cancelling the Maui week I will only have a year to use the replacement week but I should be able to do that - but this is really the only shot I had for using the SFX week. I just hate to waste weeks.

It was a risk I took with II but to be frank, I did not think SFX would come through. Maui will have to wait.
