  • I'm becoming a Sunterra fan

I was just going thru my exchange files and writing my latest review and I have decided that Sunterra is da bomb.

They have a good product in great locations. I have never been disappointed with the units from cleanliness, to location within the resort. They don't annoy me with sales calls. The units are very well stocked and they cover my pet peeves in the kitchens ( paper towels, coffee filters, dish detergent ). Sunterra ALWAYS has sharp knives too.

YES you can tell that it's a Sunterra Resort. The furnishings are very similar and most resorts have very large master baths no matter how small the unit < ie. San Luis Bay Inn >. The good news is you can find your way around in the dark when you get up in the middle of the night.

They also treat exchangers well. They don't relegate us to the units over looking parking lots and garbage bins. Well not in my experience and we have stayed in four of them.

I'm curious as I've seen implications in posts that people weren't always happy with them. Personally I would book them as an exchange without blinking.

I stayed at the Sunterra Sedona Summit last summer and it was a fantastic resort. They put me into a room with the Red Rock views.

Boca I have rated most of them at 8 or above on a scale of 1 to 10 and even Powhatten gets a 7.5 from me.

So my question is why they have chosen to bury the Sunterra branding of the Hawaiian Embassy resorts? They have nothing to be ashamed of IMHO.

        Powhatan

I think my only staying at Sunterra has been Powhatan. We, or our family, has been there 6 or 7 times. We've never gotten a "nice" unit. They have always needed refurbishment and the carpets have always been filthy.

Why do we keep going back? We like Williamsburg, it's a close trip for us. We know that with Powhatan what we are getting. I would probably rate our units (not resort itself) as a 5.5 or 6.

ps. I don't want to start a war with owners as I did once over Yonder. This is just my perception of our units.

Royal Regency would have fallen short of your expectations on these points if you received the unit we did.

We stayed at Williamsburg too and had a great time. It is an nice area and one that we can travel to in half a day.

Do you mean the Royal Regency in Vincennes(Paris)? We are thinking of doing an exchange there. From what I've read, European timeshares are on a different scale so can't be justifiably compared to North American timeshares. I heard that the Royal Regency is in a good location though.

We've only stayed in one Sunterra resort in Sedona and it was fine for us. We will be staying in 2 more next week. Looking forward to it.

Yup, that Royal Regency, and I'm not comparing it to North American timeshares, but rather to other cleaner and minimally stocked European timeshares we've stayed in - in other parts of France, plus Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Sardinia, Spain, Mallorca, and 3 different Canary Islands. I'm sure the degree of dirtiness of carpets and upholstery ("ickiness") in our unit surprised me even more because of the Sunterra name. I'd heard they weren't planning to refurbish, which may or may not be true, but if they're not, maybe it's because so many people will take it for location. Or maybe the other units are cleaner - we didn't ask to be switched, assuming they'd be full in August.

(And, as far as location, it's fine for daytime Paris, but not great if you like to be in a city at night with a chance to rest up for a spot between sojourns - too much travel time. And during our stay, they were closing one of the metro lines at night.)

By all means go if it's the only way you'll get to Paris, and/or are more than 2 people who would otherwise need at least 2 hotel rooms. But for just a couple, I'd recommend a cleaner and better-located budget hotel right in center city Paris, for about to the same $.

I went to a Sunterra presentation at a resort I own, San Luis Bay Inn, and actually found the Sunterra program appealing - but did wonder about the cleanliness standards of this company, after our stay at Royal Regency.

                  Sunterra

We have stayed in several Sunterras and have always had excellent units. We are Sunterra owners, but also own in other regimes (Fairfield, Coral resorts, etc.)
I have liked the system that allows exchanges within the Club Sunterra group with no exchange fees-admittedly, the scope of choices within Club is a bit limited, but I have found units at Williamsburg, Sedona, Gatlinburg, etc.
