I just received a check payable to Timeshare Relief in the amount of $1,700... Not sure why the lady sent it to my office, but it made for an interesting phone call!
I called her and told her of the mailing mistake. She owns a week at Carlsbad Seapointe that I gave a rough value of between $1k to $2k in the current market if she allows a few months to find a buyer. Told her a broker would probably get the lion's share of that, but she wouldn't have to pay the $3,500 out of pocket!
She had already paid Timeshare Relief $1,800. and signed the POA at the seminar she attended.. This check was her final payment..
She said they had showed her numerous pages of timeshares priced at $1.00- and told her that people try to give away thousands of timeshares everyday and never find anyone to take them! When she asked what they would do with it, she was told they used it exclusively for their vacation club inventory.
When I told her that the ads she saw on eBay and Craigslist were likely properties "given" to companies that staged these seminars and then gave the weeks away- the lightbulb went on- but I just don't have much faith it will shine for long..
I just placed her check back into an envelope to return to her.. I included a letter and recommended she rescind the POA immediately, and also inform her resort of the situation. I then offered to either help her sell, or refer her to a cooperating broker in California if she wanted to deal with someone closer to home..
My question is- do you think she'll bother to do any of that? Or will she simply place the check back in the mail and this time address the envelope properly?
