Offbeat paths for finding cheaper travel

"......I was unaware, until recently, of a service known as RedWeek that helps you rent someone else's condo time-share for the period of the time-share. The values listed range from the good to the spectacular, and enable you to enjoy a vacation in homelike settings, for a fraction of what a smaller hotel room would cost..... if you pay a small registration fee and become a member, I can almost guarantee that you'll find a vacation rental far better than the ones usually available to you. You deal directly with the owner of the time-share, and avoid a middleman's charges."

I'd bet that Arthur Frommer has a good sized readership. Good news for Redweek and people who use their services.

I used to use Redweek all the time before I bought my own timeshares.

Now I don't have to use them anymore but sometimes it's still a great option since alot of Wyndham owners used to post there in the hard to get resorts.

I'm curious, what are some of the good points of using Redweek? what did you like so much? Thanks for sharing.

Owners placing ads, and potential renters must pay a reasonable membership fee by credit card. They know that spam can be traced back so there is virtually none of it. Inquiries to the many (over 40 ) ads I have placed during the past 5 years, have come from serious individuals really interested in renting my timeshare.

Several were owners looking for an additional unit for a relative or friend, or an extra week for themselves. Some were people who had learned that it is cheaper to rent a timeshare from an owner than to buy one and be saddled for years with the expense and responsibility of ownership.

Only once was I was unsuccessful in renting our unit. We had a change of plans and placed the ad too close to the check-in date.

Two of my "customers" rented the same unit directly from us in subsequent years so I didn't have to place the ad again.
