  • Do you leave unopened food when you leave?

We just left a lovely week at Marriot's Harbor Lake. (A definate recommendation, especially if you have kids).

Anyway, we had some misc food items that were never touched and I couldn't or didn't want to bring home.

    Gallon of Water
    Canned veggies
    Juice boxes
    Ice Cream
    Cans of V8

anyway - I left them in the unit - thought the staff might keep them. If not they could throw away. My DH said I should have thrown away myself.

Your thoughts? Do you throw all away?

We always leave it. The staff can decide and easily toss it if it is unwanted. Why would one waste it?

We leave it, but in a smallish place I go looking for the cleaning crew and I tell them I'm leaving some items in the kitchen. I feel like that way they can see that I look pretty normal and they'll understand that I wanted them to take the things.

Some resorts have a large refrigerator at the timeshare office. If so, I bring the items to them when I check out.

We are at a Marriott for a few weeks. The maids have offered us stuff when we have walked by and others have check out and they know we will still be here a while.

Occasionally someone next door asks us if we want the refrigerated goods they won't be taking and we do the same for others.

WM SFO was nice enough to give me half and half that they had downstairs for my coffee for two mornings. I left the staff 12 bottles of Coca~Cola in return. More than a fair trade IMHO.

We always leave the unopened things we aren't taking with us. If there's something special we may seek out a neighbor or staff member who's been helpful.

We also tend to buy beach chairs while away and then leave them in the parking lot when we go with a sign that says "take me." I wish more resorts would have a place to recycle beach chairs and pool toys.

I always leave it for the cleaners. If they don't want it, or aren't allowed, etc., that's fine. But I'd hate to toss it when they are allowed to have it. This isn't in place of a tip, btw.

I've also ordered Pizza on occasion, from a place that has Buy 1, Get 1. If I do, I give the second one to the front desk with orders to share with the crew on duty.

We had a huge cake for a celebration once, and gave half of it to the staff at Summer Bay. From what I heard, it was gone within a couple of hours. It was a good cake

Some offices have a "food bank" bin....and they encourage guests to contribute to that.

If we leave things, we always put the items together, in close proximity, and add a personal note that invites them to help themselves or share with someone who they know might be having a tough time.

                    This is a great idea.

I used to work as a maid at a ski resort nearby, and we always loved finding unopened food. We would divide it up and take it home! Bottles of expensive brands of beer was the best.

I leave it with a note, unless the resort has a food bank collection spot. Bonnet Creek had one, for example.

I always leave my unopened food, but I like Fern's idea of giving a B1G1 offer to the staff. I use them at home, but ignore them when on Vacation. What a great way to share.

What a great idea! I never thought of doing that. I hate wasting food and have always brought so much home. I'll leave unopened items for the staff next time. (I've always had the impression that if I left food behind, even if unopened, I would be charged an extra cleaning fee to have the staff get rid of it.)

I have the reputation for matching food to days.

But there is always something left behind.

Acutally, some of it this month, bottled water and soda, went to strangers at the gas stop to fill up the rental car before the airport. DW did the giving away and I stood back and savored the questioning looks.

While staying in a TS in Mexico I caught a large Wahoo. Too much to bring it all home. When checking out I told the clerk I had left it in the freezer. She immediately took off running upstairs, leaving the desk unattended. She came back in a few minutes carrying the fish, thanking me profusely for telling her about it. She was afraid the maids would beat her to it. Since then I have always left any unopened food for them to decide if they wanted it.
