  • Using timeshare tour incentives as a retirement strategy...

I saw this article, and to be honest it scared me.. While I can certainly understand the logic behind it, I don't think the author fully understands the "pressure" that some retirees may face if they routinely attend timeshare presentations.

Maybe he doesn't realize that the vast majority of people who purchase from a tour, always tell the salesperson at the beginning, "There's no way I'm going to buy today!".

No offense to the author, but I hope this strategy doesn't catch on...

Quite an interesting concept. My parents used to go to local TS presentations just to get the cheesy gifts, which they would then re-gift to someone else. We always used to joke about which TS our "Christmas gifts" came from.
Having been through the sales pitches, I know how hard they are to resist (yes - we were suckered into a purchase that way too). Since the older folks in this article already owned TS, they knew what they were in for. I think it would be a lot harder for newbies to avoid the temptation and hard sales pitches. I don't even go to owner updates anymore because they are basically sales pitches and I value my vacation time.

I read a few Disney-oriented boards, and every once in a while a young family looks at the tours as a way to subsidize their vacation. I try to talk them out of it---I can just imagine the conversion rate on folks like this is sky high---but inevitably someone chimes in with "just say no, and you'll be fine."

      Yeah, right.

I guess the buying lottery ticket strategy wasn't working out.
