  • Best Way to Say NO

I've got a preview trip coming up at a Marriott property. I don't usually even talk to the them when they call, but I did want to try the resort and I thought I'd give it a go. I know that they're going to do the usual pitch. I really don't need or want a timeshare. So, what's the best most effective way to get out of there with the least amount of pain or drama? What doesn't work well?

Marriott is a "top-shelf" product and their sales presentations are informative, but not pushy and without hard tactics. I have gone to two and they were not stressful. Marriott is a class act.

I have always said, "I don't make important decisions or spend large amounts of money without taking my time to weigh the pros & cons."

If going to a less-than-reputable t/s presentation, I take notes in front of them and explain to them that I work in my state's Office of The Attorney General. They usually give me wide berth after this.

Welcome to TS4Ms! Why lie or spout superfluous BS?

      Dear BB,
      Welcome to TS4Ms!
Why lie or spout superfluous BS? Just say no at every opportunity. Marriott saleswomen have to make a living, too. They will gladly discuss pros & cons if you let them.

Mentioning your familiarity with prices on the resale market is usually enough to shut them up.

Not interested in lying to anyone. I'd like to walk in, say 'just here for the cheap hotel' and be done. BUT if that doesn't work then what's the best tact? I've though of a few.

          1) Why by from you when I can get it for half or less on the resale market?
          2) Why tie up up 20-40 K not gaining interest when I could take that interest + the 1K maintenance fee and have 2-3K to spend on anyplace I want.
          3) See numbers above, That is more than I'd want to spend on a vacation so why not spend what I normally do, e.g. less that 1K between hotel points and finding deals online. I just don't need that much hotel.

          Thanks for the input all.

I never sign up for the preview, I just don't want to waste the salespersons time..

When I get that really pushy person who can't seem to take the hint, I just give them my business card and tell them some current prices for listings.. That normally ends it pretty quickly.

The funny part is that I've actually gotten two sales this way for cooperating brokers since resale prices are often even far lower than the employee discounts.

I actually know one broker who was having a slow month, so went to Vegas for a week. He scheduled a tour for every day he was there, and proceeded to sell the salespeople. His concept was that they believe in the product, often have an inflated sense of value for the same, and should have disposable income. He wrote four sales that week! I don't know if he's done it since, but it was a very interesting "business model"!

If your really not interested in buying why waste their time or more inportant your time?

I would copy some listings of the resort your going to from some forum site with asking prices. After hearing some details you want bring this list up and ask why would you pay their price when you can buy from these owners at or below their asking price.
Would bet money Marriott can not come close to those prices. Once sales person see's your list they probably will send you on your way.

                  That's *awesome*.

I think "I'm just here for the cheap hotel" is the right way to go. I usually use some variant of "I don't want to waste your time" when the parking pass body snatchers push.

Part of the room rate deal that I got was that I'm required to go on the 90 minute tour of their facility. I'd prefer to skip it but then they charge me the full price for the room. Just trying to get in, get out, and get to the beach. I'll probably print out several sheets including the current price for rentals, the current price for re-sales.

No BS, no lies, when I did this, I was doing my internship at the AG's office.

Sharing what's worked for me, personally, to shut down the overbearing hucksters at the less than reputable (RHC, Wyndham, Sunterra/DRI, Westgate )and a couple other presentations several years back.

                      Problem ?

Spence was not responding to you, Beags. He was responding to the OP. Your post just happened to come between the two.
