  • RCI cancellation fee is the price of exchange or $25?

I booked an RCI week few months ago and at the time of booking an agent told me that cancellation fee is $25. No I called and tried to cancel and another agent told me that I would forfeit the whole exchange fee $169.

Which one is true? They don't actually do an exchange if I cancel. so why should I pay ful exchange fee in this case? Or RCI is so disorganized that the fee left to the particular agent to decide?

    From the RCI web site:

For Confirmations made on or after November 1, 2009, if a Member confirms an Exchange twenty-one (21) or more days prior to the check-in date and the Exchange is cancelled before the end of the next RCI business day, the Member will receive a full refund of the Exchange fee paid and the Week used to make the Exchange shall be redeposited into the Member’s RCI account. In such case, the Trading Power of the redeposited Week shall be restored to what it was at the time the original Exchange was confirmed.

If a Member confirms an Exchange twenty-one (21) or more days prior to the check-in date and the Exchange is cancelled after the end of the next business day, the Member shall not be entitled to any refund of the Exchange fee paid. The Week used to make the Exchange shall be redeposited into the Member’s RCI account. In such case the Trading Power of the redeposited Week may be recalculated based on the date of the cancellation.

If a Member confirms an Exchange twenty (20) or less days prior to the check-in date, the Member shall not be entitled to any refund of the Exchange fee paid regardless of when the cancellation occurs. The Week used to make the Exchange shall be redeposited into the Member’s RCI account. In such case the Trading Power of the redeposited Week may be recalculated based on the date of the cancellation.

As Philsfan noted, the entire exchange fee is now forfeited if more than 24 hours after reserving. However, if you purchase "cancellation protection" from RCI (either $69 or $79, hard to track the increases), then you get a "coupon" in your account for the amount of the exchange fee - I presume it has an expiration date, but it can be used toward another exchange.

Yes, it does have an expiration date. Of course I can't remember what it is, but there is one. No more than a year, I know that for sure. It was important to me 2 years as I had an exchange I probably would cancel. I needed to time the cancellation so that I was within the "coupon" period to use the returned exchang fee for a new exchange.

Maybe this should be on the RCI board, for future reference.

More from 'Terms and Condition', the credit is good for 6 months from the cancellation date:

RCI Vacation Protection offers the opportunity to protect the Trading Power of a Member’s Deposit and provides a credit for the members full exchange fee if the exchange vacation is changed or cancelled for any reason. Upon changing or canceling the confirmed exchange vacation, the member receives an exchange fee credit that is valid for six (6) months after date of cancellation.

That's it! I knew I had to wait to cancel to well after I knew I wasn't going to use the exchange as I was also waiting for a bulk deposit to hit for the new exchange. I sure didn't want to cancel too soon and then lose the exchange fee refund.

FWIW, I think having is good for only 6 months stinks. They already have the $$ so why not make it at least a year? If you cancel due to health or changes that result in running out of vacation time, then 6 months might not give you time to "recover" and be able to re-exchange. Let alone date timing considerations... can't wait until the next summer, ski season, whatever comes around again.
