Newbie TimeShare Where to BUY from who

I have been looking at Redweek.com-as recommended from some members. Tug Forum, EBay, Sell My Timeshare, Craiglist, etc... Can anyone recommend a good site to purchase reasonably priced timeshares? I am not sure how trusting I should be. You have been helpful to suggest I find a timeshare close to home and one that I want to visit.

Is it best to buy a timeshare only in the red season. How is New Hampshire in April??? Maine would be too cold in April. Is Virginia Beach nice in April? or September?

Like the BEACH so looking for timeshares on the beach...

April in New England is known as mud season-not a good time to own. You might want to forget April in Virginia as well. Best bet is to buy where you want to go often, but in a desirable season so you could trade it or even sell it should there be life changes.

I would suggest that you buy platinum season, unless you know that you specifically want to travel in another season. Also, as you've already mentioned, buy where, and when you would like to travel, 2 out of 3 years, anyway.

Ebay is most likely where you'd get the best buy. But, before you buy anything, you should educate yourself fully on timeshares, and the various systems, points vs weeks, etc.

Educate yourself before jumping on anything. I've purchased many TS's on ebay without any problems yet but I may have just been quite lucky. I've also purchased from brokers who specialize in stuff I can't find on ebay.

I think it depends on what TS system you want to buy where to look for the units or points. Some are readily and cheaply available on ebay and others you will definetely have to use a broker to find. I'd probably not buy from an owner direct unless they were realistic about the market. Many sellers are in denial about the value of what they own and it takes an intermediary (the real estate brokers) to bring them down to earth.

Hang around and ask questions. I'm sure everyone would be happy to help you in your research.

You should also know what to do for due diligence before buying. Particularly to determine ownership and whether everything is current and as advertised.

This is where dealing with a broker is definetely worth the fee.

Different brokers focus on different resort chains. Our own BocaBum can guide you to all things Bluegreen. I used Seth Nock for my HGVC purchase, he was very easy to deal with. For Wyndham, I just bought on ebay.

You should also check out the local timeshare resale brokers in the areas you are interested in. Brokers are required to submit any offer you make to the owner. The first timeshare I bought, an August 2BR week on the OBX was listed with the local broker for $3,800. I made an offer of $2,000 and it was accepted.

Also, make a list of the sold out resorts in the area you are interested in and contact the HOA's. All HOA's get back foreclosures and deedbacks periodically, and a few of them will be in desirable time periods. Since the HOA has no sales staff, they will often take lower offers than their original aksing price. HOA's also often maintain lists of owners who want to sell, and sometimes that is the only place they list.
