  • Friend just bought 4 weeks retail. Ay yay yay.

I've got a friend who I just found out bought 4 weeks at Westgate in RCI points.

I guess all these years of talking timeshares and she didn't understand the most important part about buying timeshares.

I feel bad for her but she doesn't want to hear anything about how she overpaid. And she's an administrator at my hospital so she's an intelligent woman. I just don't get it.

I guess some people just have zero sales resistance and she purchased two weeks from Westgate a few years ago too.

It's all your fault. All that talk about timesharing and you forgot to tell her the first rule Come to think of it, it's an easy one to overlook when you are casually talking with friends/acquaintances.

Don't worry, just keep quiet and be ready to help her figure out how to use what she has overpaid for when she's ready to ask.

      Glitter,
I've actually shown her stuff on ebay so it's not like she wasn't aware she obviously just couldn't resist the sales pitch.
I'm amazed at how one can fall for it over and over again.
      Incredible.

The good news is she only paid $8000 for 4 weeks so I guess $2K per week isn't the worst deal in the world but sheez, I'm dumbfounded.
I hope she got a ton of points for that money.

There are people that do not believe that you can buy TSs "used" and still get the same benefits as buying from the developer - and as we do know, with Marriott, Starwood, Wyndham, Bluegreen and other big chains, you DO NOT get all the benefits of buying direct.
But if you know going in what you will or will not get, it makes sense to buy resale most of the time.

There are people who do not "trust" buying from an online seller or agency.

But there are people who know all this and still chose to buy retail.
The salesperson told them it was better to do this.

8K from the developer would give her maybe a studio every other year???
How could she think she got 4 weeks of anything for 8K??

A 2BR week in orlando would sell for at least 16K from a developer - Marriott 2BR Platinum weeks in Orlando sell for 25K

I think this is much worse then you think!

I agree! The kind of game these developers play, she could have bought an off-season 2BR lock-off, and being lead to believe that she could deposit as two weeks and get two bonus weeks every year. Worse yet, she could not even pay someone to take it offer her hands later...

Or...she bought two off-season 2Br weeks and lock them off as four weeks. More M/F for her to deal with. OMG...I hope this is not true

It probably is worse than I think now that you put it in perspective.
I bet she bought a contract that they told her would give her 4 weeks and they were probably talking about those 7500 to 9000 point weeks that I love so much. I think she's thinking to use these points in the Bahamas but I'd be curious to see what kind of inventory is in the Bahamas for 7500 pts.
I'll have to check it out.

OMG is right. I hope this is not the case but would probably be better than 4 weeks of MF's. I'll have to get more details. Maybe it's a small points package. I hope she isn't in over her head with MF's.

Don't feel bad. A good friend of mine who I meet with in our business groups every week just bought retail Wyn points down in San Antonio over the Christmas holidays. He knows I'm the timeshare guy and buy a lot of our ownerships on ebay. He's a salesman himself.

I gave him crap for buying retail but he says "we weren't planning on buying". They got sucked in by the free stuff and got caught in the presentation. While he can't rescind now, he knows to get me to help him maximize what he's got now. Those presentations, if done right, get results! I guess that's why they keep doing them.

People make bad buying decisions all the time. Just look at smokers or gamblers.
Smarter ones trick stupider ones and get their money. Business as usual.

Yup, those Wyndham folks are sure effective if you fall in their web.

I bought my Wyndham points in San Antonio, got them on ebay pretty cheap.

I have a relative who used one of our timeshares one time. Before they left on the trip I talked about the sales pitch and showed them resale pricing on units.

While they were at the resorts she attended the sales presentation, and signed up. That evening she called me to talk about the purchase and I went through the whole discussion again.

But she was totally mesmerized by all the added benefits she was going to get by buying from the developer, and she simply would not be dissuaded.

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                          “You shouldn't wear that body.”
