  • Exchane implications of possible CLC takeover of Sunterra Europe

Momentum seems to be gatherinig for a Club La Costa purchase of Sunterra Europe. Ian Podesta reports a definite offer from the owner of CLC, allied with a former CEO of what is now Sunterra Europe before Sunterra bought it. There were earlier reports that CLC had lined up the financing for the purchase, that Sunterra had made a public statement that it would consider selling its European operations, and that Sunterra's largest shareholder was demanding such a sale in a published statement.

How would this change the dynamics of timeshare exchanging?

First, using the Sunterra mini-system approach for exchanges to Europe would almost certainly go up in smoke.

Second, while Sunterra is in II, Club La Costa is in RCI. This would probably make some European exchanges easier in RCI and harder in II, although individual members will likely be grandfathered where they can remain with the exchange company they are in if they want to.

Third, some of the UK inventory will likely be used for CLC internal exchanges.

Fourth, CLC is a trading partner of DAE, so it should increase DAE access to ''on request'' inventory in Europe.

Fifth, it will probably increase the number of timeshare rentals to the general public in Europe, once more of this inventory gets into RCI's spacebank.
