My first purchase was thought out. I knew how much it was selling for, where I wanted, when I would use it etc....

How many of you bought their time share after actively seeking to do so?

We also bought a 1BR resale at San Diego Country Estates (in 1988) through a newspaper ad. It was recommended by a friend. In December, 2010 we gave the 1 BR to my BIL and are in the process of buying a 2BR off EBAY for
$1.

We just went to "look", at that time I didn't even know what timeshare was. My dad had heard about this place and [former] dh and I went down with him and my mom to check it out. This was at San Diego Country Estates. You purchase a two-week interval, and it could be broken up for use there on a nightly basic. Green fees (and carts I think) were included in ownership. How could we turn this down. To be honest, it was a very low key presentation. We ended up with each of us buying a two-bedroom, two week interval for use at the resort. Less than a year later we bought a one-bedroom two week interval to use for trades. I still own the one bedroom to this day (the two bedroom went with the divorce settlement ).

I've never been on a timeshare tour, and only spoken to a sales agent once, via email. My purchases have all been pretty carefully thought out, and the first was after a good six months worth of research. In hindsight, I still might have done one or two things differently, but as everything was relatively small-potatoes in terms of purchase costs, there are no major regrets.

How many of you actually went on a “Fly and Buy” excursion or any other active form of seeking to buy a time share?
From that point on, all my purchases were done with full knowledge of the resale alternatives. I have made and kept purchases directly from the developer. So, there are times when it does make sense to make a developer purchase.

Our first purchase was at Massanutten, VA and was not a planned purchase. However, after experiencing timesharing/exchanging, we started really looking into what other options were out there. We sold our Massanutten resort and sought to purchase with Marriott, where we have been extraordinarily happy.HLIW

I went with my sister's in-laws to hear about upgrading their Wyndham ownership. He is smart man and I asked him how much did he think this upgrade would cost him? $10K. The salesman got him for $17K. I found out later he had rescinded.
But on the way home in the car (15+ hours), I kept thinking - there has to be a cheaper way to buy that... Cheaper way? If you want cheaper, go to eBay - for "used" stuff. Sure enough, eBay sells timeshares.
Found the BBSs about a year after buying a TS or two.
Thanks to all for the education.
