  • HGVC vs Wyndham resale

    Hi everyone-
Brand new here but I have been reading posts for about two weeks. My family wants to purchase a timeshare not for investment purposes but because we vacation frequently and want to get the most space and bang for our buck. I know alot about HGVC as we have friends that own and have been to a presentation. I know not to buy resale and have been in contact with a real estate agent about buying a timeshare. Recently I have been reading about Wyndham and they have more home resorts in the system that interest us compared to HGVC. Now I know I can exchange through RCI but would rather not have to pay those fees. We will only need a one bedroom wherever we stay.
    My question is this: Economically which makes more sense to purchase;
an HGVC with 3400 pts or a Wyndham with 156000 points. We definatly want a points account that floats annually. I know what and where I can get with HGVC just don't know what 156000 wyndham points will get me.
Thanks again for all the great posts I have read and any help would be amazing.
    thank you

Have you been looking at ads on ebay? There are a couple sellers who show point charts with their Wyndham ads. It will only show for that particular resort, but it should help give you an idea.

"My question is this: Economically which makes more sense"

The best sense is, each time you want to get away, go to Ebay and search "timeshare rental" pick one and enjoy.

Yes have seen some on ebay and it seems with 150000 pts will get us what we're looking for. I know Hgvc has all little hidden fees for rescuing pts, depositing etc. Im wondering if Wyndham has the same deal bc it seems to me that Wyndham is cheaper and has more home resorts where we would rather stay.

I have stayed in both HGVC and Wyndham resorts. We far prefer the resort quality of HGVC over Wyndham. However it really depends on which one has the resorts where you want to visit. We don't own at either one so I have no personal interest. We have exchanged through SFX and rented weeks.

Personally, I wouldn't buy either one. I would rent the weeks I want which usually costs less than the maintenance fee for owning. There are tons of Wyndham weeks for rent just about anywhere you would want to go. I rented a 2BR unit at Wyndham Waikiki Beachwalk for less than the annual M/F.

              Choosing between two point systems..

              This is a common question..

The first thing to consider is purchase cost.. Wyndham's are dirt cheap! Hilton's still maintain decent resale value (especially for the platinum weeks). That alone may be the deciding factor.. If money is not an important concern then the following may help.

A comparison strategy I recommend is to look at the last five years, and try to look forward into the next three.. Write down where you have vacationed, and then write down where you would like to vacation in the next few years.. (The reason I recommend looking back is simply because its human nature to want to travel to incredibly exotic locations, but often we find ourselves vacationing in comfortable drive to locales where we have already been.. Sometimes it is better to be practical than romantic!!)

Then- you simply check to see which system more closely matches your list. It's also wise to spend time looking at resort reviews for your target resorts. There can be quite a bit of difference in the quality of individual resorts within a system.

I have an article about HGVC that contains basic info about the program at this link. Hilton Grand Vacations Club (Hgvc)- an Overview of The Timeshare Points System

If you google, you can also find a link to the online Wyndham Vacation Club brochure as an electronic document that will contain point charts, resort descriptions, etc.. I have it saved at home, but don't remember the link..

The system that is a better match and that you are comfortable with the resort reviews is the program you purchase. If neither is a great match- then focus on rentals until you discover which timeshare developer works best for your situation.

              Good luck!

HGVC is definitely going to be more expensive, but as a resale owner, you get all of the perks that a retail buyer gets. The only exception is that your points don't count toward "elite" level (which starts at 14K points).

3400 HGVC points won't get you much -- an off-season week in a 1BR. But you can bank and borrow your yearly points together to get a more "expensive" week. If you trade into RCI, 3400 points will get you a 1BR week in red (top) season at most any resort (HGVC trades very well in RCI). 4800 points (1BR Platinum season week) would give you much more options.

I don't have any experience w/ Wyndham, but have been very pleased with my HGVC ownership. You just need to decide if it is worth the price premium to you.
