  • Ski destination for first time skiers

We hope to go skiing this winter for the first time. Anyone have a destination recommendation?

    Consider Christmas Mountain

I took our kids (aged 12, 10 and 7) for their first time skiing at Christmas Mountain Village in Wisconsin this past year.

No one who has been skiing in the rocky mountains would be much impressed, but for an introduction it was awesome and my kids honestly didn't know any better

The prices for lift tickets and ski school were very reasonable compared to CO.

Thank you for that information. I know that the ski lift, and rentals etc. is expensive. A friend of mine told me that they go to West Viginia because it is cheaper than Colorado. Any others have any advice on a destination?

Where do you live and is skiing the primary purpose of your vacation or do you want to fit some skiing in while as one part of a larger vacation objective? As first-time skiers it does not make sense to travel very far if your primary purpose is to ski. OTOH - if your goal is to do a winter vacation and to do some skiing while you are there, that is a very differsent question.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

        “You shouldn't wear that body.”

For a first time, find the closest ski hill that will give a beginner lesson and rent equipment. Plenty of time to travel and spend $$ once you know you really want to make it part of your life.

In general I agree, except that if someone is a first-time skier and is also doing a one-week timeshare stay they are probably not going to be spending most of their time on the slopes. In that situation going some place just because it is "close" might not be a good way to spend seven days of vacation time.
OTOH - if they have the option of just staying for a couple of nights with the primary goal of spending a day or two learning to ski, then absolutely go for the closest location that has bunny slopes.

Hence the questions I posted above.

First off, I live in south Louisiana where snow is something my kids don't see. Rachel is 17 and she just saw snow year before last for the first time. Has not seen it since. So, once in her life she has seen snow.

I imagine you are wise to guide me to a conclusion that on a first time snow trip we might want to have some other things planned besides skiing.

I am not too familiar on snow areas besides the big name ones.

I think I would like to drive there so, somewhere not too far is good.

OK - given that and assuming you are looking at a one-week TS stay, I thiink that I would make New Mexico my primary focus. You'll spend about a day getting there. Once you are there, there are a lot of options besides skiing. So this becomes more like a winter mountains vacation than a skiing vacation.

                  from south LA

From Louisiana for a driving trip, you might also check out the skiing around Gatlinburg, TN.

Similar to Christmas Mountain - small slopes, easy for a beginning, less expensive than CO skiing.

Lake Tahoe offers lots to do besides skiiing and has a lot of timeshares.

Tahoe is great, but a tough trip from the east. After my riders graduated from the local hills we started heading out west - they love Tahoe. In winter, there is often too much snow, making it tough to get around.

If you are willing to fly, Park City (Utah) offers a lot of non-skiing stuff to do, too and is an easy flight to Salt Lake on Delta (prob direct from Atlanta? not sure).

But once you start heading out west for snow, you are paying some big money for a sport you can't do at home.

Agreed. OP is in Louisiana and is looking for someplace within driving distance, which eliminates Tahoe. That's why I suggested New Mexico, but even that is one hellaciously long driving day.

If that is farther than the OP wishes to drive, then I guess they would be looking at someplace such as western North Carolina, where conditions are dicier.

How about Massanutten? Is that good for beginners or would you not recommend it?

Ski season at Lake Tahoe officially ended yesterday.

I read where the ski season officially ended yesterday at Lake Tahoe. It was very late this year because of the extremely heavy snowpack this year.
