  • Question relative to purchase of Wyndham Waikiki Beachwalk Time Share by Octogenarian

My wife and I were married in Honolulu and have lost count on the number of times we have returned there to celebrate anniversaries for a couple of weeks during the month of January over the years

In 2010 my wife was talked into buying 154000 points for the home resort Wyndham Waikiki Beachwalk at a purchase price of $27,100.00. These 154000 points qualify us for 1 week in a one bedroom at Waikiki Beachwalk only during January which is the only time we are interested in going to Honolulu. There are many units available through VRBO for that second week.

I say my wife was talked into it because it was against my better judgement. Nostalgia entered into it based to our continuing connection to Honolulu and Waikiki and owning a small piece of it. I also believe my wife's maternal instincts surfaced by her declaring the Wyndham sales guy was "such a nice young man". So in order not to ruin our vacation by being accused of being a skin flint once again, I reluctantly signed up. You know- happy wife, happy life and vice versa.

In January 2011 we used our 154000 points plus 154000 bonus points and stayed at Waikiki Beachwalk for two weeks. The unit was fine as far as I was concerned but my wife was somewhat disappointed because we were shown a two br unit during the presentation and the kitchen was larger with granite tops. the lanai was larger, and she claimed both bedrooms were larger in the sample unit. However her disappointment was a blessing in disguise. She fell for the free $100 voucher to sit through another sales pitch to upgrade for more points which we refused despite the
high pressure exerted during the presentation.

We had other family obligations in January 2012 so we traded 112000 points for a week in a unit (Elysian Beach) in St Thomas later this winter. I'll be depositing the additional 42000 points with RCI to use for a few days somewhere in the future We have also been to St Thomas many times over the years and even though it isn't Hawaii we are familiar with the area.

I already reserved a week at Waikiki Beachwalk in January 2013 because I understand it is very much in demand. I probably will get another unit in Waikiki for an additional week later through VRBO (maybe even at Wyndham Beachwalk),

Now I come to my question. Ebay currently has an offer for 500000 annual points for sale at Waikiki Beachwalk with a "buy it now" option at $4000.00. What am I missing here? What am I getting for $27,100.00 which I would not get for the $4000.00 offered on ebay? At first I though it was for a one time usage of the points but the way I read the $4000.00 is for 500,000 points every year at Waikiki Beachwalk.

    I would appreciate comments.

Next to nothing. I hate to put it so bluntly, but it is true. The only thing you miss out on is the ability to qualify as a "VIP" owner, but the perks associated with VIP ownership, while nice, are really worth nowhere near what it costs to obtain them. What's more, those perks can change at any time, and have changed in the past.

If you could make use of more vacation time in the Wyndham system, it is worth considering a resale, for sure.

You will not get Plus Partnership (which is 2400 add on). You will not get Bonus point also. You will not be VIP for the 1st 2 years. That is all.

Other than that, nothing. You will be the same as resale or developer purchase.

If you later on willing to spend the same amount of money to buy more from Wyndham, than you loss the chance of getting VIP for longer time.

The other thing to point out is that $4000 for 500,000 points is a little high for a resale right now. The resale market is at an all time low, and if you really want to purchase more points, I think you can do better. Just remember you are locking yourself into those on=going maintenance fees.

          The undying thanks from Wyndham

          Is the only real difference.
The $4000 package has 3.25 times as many points as your $27K purchase. The difference from retail to resale is huge on any timeshare and on Wyndham is is around 99% less on the resale market.

Having reached your 80's, you may want to consider how many more years you are going to feel up to traveling to Hawaii. My mother is now 84, and she spent the last 30 winters in Yuma. She has suffered from some health issues and this year she is staying north, not comfortable spending the season in the warmth by herself. Just a thought, as unless your have a heir that would want these,( most don't) the estate will have trouble unloading either or both without spending part of the cash reserves.

          for what it is worth,

His initial purchase was a developer purchase, and should include Plus Partners. As I understand it, Plus Parters is an account attribute, not a deed attribute. So, Plus Partners options would be extended to any points he owns, developer or resale.

Yeah, he already spend 27k, so it is included and extend to all the points follow up.

But I believe the question is
What am I getting for $27,100.00 which I would not get for the $4000.00 offered on ebay?
I am not sure if he is asking follow up purchase or initial purchase.

If it is the difference for the follow up purchase, it is VIP (with another 27k, he should have 300k), and some bonus point and very likely 2 year gold VIP. If it is initial purchase, he will also not have Plus Partner (which is an extra 2,400), and bonus point and 2 year VIP.
