  • Manhattan Parking

Well, time is coming close to head out to the Manhattan Club. I am really excited. Gonna take three weeks and head out east. Starting off a few nights in Nashville, then Washington D.C., then New York City, then Jersey Shore, Phillie, Son wants to go and visit Amish Country...Very excited.

I need to know what is the best way to park in Manhattan. The Manhattan Club says they have the best price on parking...Is that so?

My husband said maybe we can park in New Jersey and take the subway in....Is that even practical? Would appreciate feedback!

    Thanks!

Parking is crazy expensive in the city. I would be tempted to drop everything off at TMC and then put the car over in a lot in NJ for the rest of the stay.

I use icon when I need to park in the city.

The used to be a public lot over in Long Island City, Queens about 4 stops on the R train from Manhattan Club

If you park on a street in Queens or Brooklyn, Just be sure to check the signs so you do not park on a day that has alternate day parking.

How much does that cost? And is it safe? Can you leave your car there all week?

Free parking in Queens and yes you can leave it all week as long as there is no days that it has to be moved. I would check in unload then drive it over and take a train.

What days do you need to park? If you will be leaving the car and won't need in/out, there are streets that you could grab a spot on in the morning/afternoon on Friday once the alternate side "no Parking" window is over, and then leave your car until Tuesday morning. I'd send you a bit further uptown to look, and it might take a bit of waiting/luck on the street. There are plenty of streets, but a little tricky to look up the regs. The iPhone has an app for that, I'm not kidding, but not sure how good it is since I haven't used it myself - you can also google "alternate side parking regulatons NYC" but the DMV search function is NOT userfriendly if you don't have a specific street in mind.

The way it works is that many no-meter residential streets need to be cleared on alternate sides for street cleaning - one side is Mon/Thurs and the other Tues/Fri. The "no parking" time is an hour and a half window - usually in the morning, the time ranges. Where I used to live it was 11:30 - 1. So I'd move my car before 11:30 (usually to a meter on the avenue), then come back about 15 minutes before parking is legal again, find spot and then just wait in car til it's legal. I got lucky most of the time, but you have to be prepared to throw it in a lot if it doesn't work out.

You can park it at the NY Waterway ferry lot in Weehawken, NJ, and then take the ferry in. NY Waterway has free buses on the NYC side; their 57th Street bus will take you to within a block of the Manhattan Club.

                Here's info on parking:

They're doing construction by the Chart House right now, so it's kind of tricky to get into or out of. But still open for business.

People have recommended another restaurant to me, Waterside, in Edgewater, which also has a great view. I haven't been there; it's fancy. Have you tried this place, Frank? It used to be called Frank's Waterside!

                    Waterside | 7800 B River Road, North Bergen, NJ 07047 | 201.861.7767

BTW, if anyone ever wants to stop for a quick snack with an unbelievable view of the NYC skyline, there's a pizza place in Edgewater where you can get an ordinary $2 slice and sit in their dining area inside or outside and look at a million-dollar view. It's called Pizza Club. This is their website--they don't even mention the view!

That pizza place looks like a good cheap way to see the view. How far from Hoboken?
BTW as the new one world trade gets built the new hot view is now in Newport. You can get a water taxi there but parking is not fun. The whole area is built up and mostly new

Yeah--Jersey City is way too far for us, and also way too trendy. Pizza Club is probably about 20 minutes from Hoboken--you would go to River Road by the Sheraton that's right by the Lincoln Tunnel. Then just follow the road up, up, up, all along the river. Pizza Club is in the same strip mall as Trader Joe's. There's a pretty good sushi place in that mall with a view, too.

Before you get to Pizza Club, at the mall with the Target, there's also an Outback there with a pavillion at the back where you can walk and look at the river. You can walk very far along the river through Edgewater--there's a public access walkway.

You can also see the river from Whole Foods' parking lot!
