If you need things that are school year friendly, you should probably buy prime summer weeks or maybe points in mini systems.
Traveling Broadens the mind and I want to do more French Quarter Fest in New Orleans is my favourite festival

I was going to suggest buying points in a smaller system as well. If you're good going to a couple of the same places every year, that's a good way to go. I would guess most good smallish systems are like Bluegreen, where it's very easy to get into ten or so different resorts in the summer, but can be quite difficult to get into some others. So long as you like the ten that're easy to get into, you're golden! But people who join Bluegreen just to stay at Big Cedar are not so happy, because it's tough to get into Big Cedar some times of the year. OTOH, if you can't get into Big Cedar, Falls Village is right in the same area, and BG keeps building other units in the Big Cedar area that have the same access to the Big Cedar amenities as well as pools of their own and all. Those are easy to get into -- they just cost a lot more points.

BG would not be a good choice if by "mountains" you mean the Rockies, but poke around at some of the points systems and you might be happily surprised. If you want to be on the beach in the summer or on the ski slopes over Christmas vacation you need to reserve early, and you should probably find out how tough it is to get into the resort you particularly want at that time of year. If you just want a change of view and you're okay with being a few miles off the beach instead of having an oceanfront unit, you're going to have more options. But if you get the right points system, you don't have to worry about housekeeping fees or exchange fees or that sort of thing - pay for the points and your membership fee, and you're done. Buying at the regular weeks resort you'll always go to is often cheaper in terms of yearly fees, but calculate in the trading fees with a weeks ownership and points systems start looking like a better deal.
