  • Longest drive / shortest stay

Ok, so all these great sighting's have gotten me thinking. I like to do a lot of 3 or 4 night stays as I am sure many of us out there do when we cannot get a whole week. One or two nights is not really worth driving unless it is within an hour or two.

So I am wondering, what the rest of us use as a guideline for how far they will drive for a resort taking into account how long they will be able to stay? Anybody have strict rules where they will allow certain amount of drive time for say a 2 night stay, and so on, and increase based on the number of nights they can stay? I am now realizing that there are several resorts that are within say a 10 hour drive in places like RI, VT, CT, NY etc and curious how many people would do that kind of drive for a 4 night stay?

I personally have basically set a limit of 5 hours on resorts with a check-in of Friday night where I can get there after work. Anything more than that, and I'd probably have to take the day off. If you were driving 5 hours to a resort what is the shortest stay you would make?

I would not drive 10 hours each way for a four night stay.
I have less tolerance than most for road time - needs to be less than 2 hours for one night. I drive 2.5 hours to get to the Berkshires and sometimes only get two nights, but it doesn't feel like enough. I think I give it an extra hour each way on the road per extra night, but I max out at 7 hours (to VT, for a week) without flying.

I would drive up to 400 miles for a 2 or 3 night stay and have gone 10 hours for a 3 night stay (before timeshare). Since timesharing, I prefer a full week stay and when we frequented Cancun with air travel we preferred a 3 week stay. There have been a few times when we left before the week was up and once after only a 3 night stay.

I'm happy when my drive is 200 yards. Downhill with the wind, and a cartpath bounce, maybe 250 max.

I normally stay about 4 hours.

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought this was about golf.

For the other, I drive 21 hours and stay 6 months.

I'll add that the type of driving makes a difference. If it's a long, pretty, easy, drive, I extend my limits. I guess that'd be true for some of the OPs destinations, but for me the traffic around NYC and often on the way to/from weekend spots (Route 95 is deadly) makes it unpleasant.

I live in the san francisco bay area (middle of the state) so my rule of the thumb is anything out of state has to be more than two nights.

              For me it all depends.

The purpose of driving can be to get from Point A to Point B - in that case I want to do it as fast as possible. Other times, driving itself and seeing the land and country, is a major part of the drive. In that case I drive more slowly and enjoy the drive. Other times, I just like to get away, and driving gives me an opportunity to clear my head and just get away from things for awhile. In the latter two cases, the drive time to get to the timeshare in relation to the time spent would matter much less.
