If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Kicks off? I thought it all ended on Fat Tuesday, but those pics are dated Wednesday.

Around here, we celebrate with pączki, although King Cakes are getting more popular.

I was in Venice for Carnival some years ago. It was a lot of fun, even with the cold weather.

We have been to the Carnival in Mexico a few times. Mazatlan and Vera Cruz have the 2 biggest and most famous ones in Mexico though there are Carnivals in over 200 pueblos in Mexico. We have been to the one in Mazatlan and have also been to the one in Ensenada Mexico which is 1 1/2 hour drive south of San Diego. We have gone for the full week. It is a lot of fun. It officially ends on Fat Tuesday.

It is a pre-Lent celebration celebrated in places with a large Catholic population.

I think you're right. Most celebrations begin a couple of weeks prior to Fat Tuesday. Fat Tuesday is usually the closing celebration. The title/date, is a little misleading.

Actually they typically start just 1 week prior to Fat Tuesday. I don't know of any that run 2 weeks.

I think most run longer than 1 week. Officially in Venice, it may be a 12 day period, but over the years additional pre-day lelebrations have been added......In Venice the official Start of Carnival this year was Feb 1, but there were two prior events connected to Carnival on the 26th & 27th of January.....

                In New Orleans....

January 6th is the twelfth night after Christmas. Also called the Feast of the Epiphany or King's Day or simply Twelfth Night, January 6th is the official end of the Christmas season, In New Orleans January 6th Twelfth Night, is a significant day for another reason. It's the official start of the Carnival season, that leads up to the day before Ash Wednesday, or Mardi Gras.

The one in Mazatlan is 6 days.
                  http://mazatlanlife.com/carnaval-2013/

The one in Rio de Janeiro Brazil is 5 days
                  http://www.rio-carnival.net/rio_carn...l_programs.php

The one in Vera Cruz is 7 days. This year 15 Cubans disappeared from the Carnival parade in Vera Cruz. It is assumed that they defected which happens quite often.

The one in Ensenada is 6 days.

So it appears that it is dependent on where it is at with the Mexican ones typically being 6 or 7 days.

Yup, nothing written in stone here. They obviously differ by location.
