when we first got one, quite a few years ago, I thought we were special....now we get them twice a year or so...does everyone?

I just got one , for seemingly no reason. It is good through July.

There are different types, an some are much better than others. Like jackio I just got one for no reason good through July.

I believe I've only ever used two, and let several expire unused.

Some are better than others.
lately the ones I have been getting must use the grid which is only useful if I want to go to Orlando.
I have used them to get grande vista Marriott in Orlando pretty cheap.

All the bomnus weeks I get are now the "grid type". With a week that I recently disposed of I got bones weeks that were only usable for within 60 days of occupancy and at the cost of an exchange. Aside from the deposit-earned bonus weeks, I also get some for no apparent reason. Most go unused now, but until a few years ago I had managed to use them all.
