  • recycling at timeshares

I was surprised last week to learn that there was no recycling capability at the resort we stayed in (Fox River in Sheridan, IL). I mentioned it and they said they were working on it. Hoping that most resorts now have this in place.

Some places do, some places don't, timeshare or not.

Funny, read your topic "Recycle All Timeshares." Thought that sounded good.

At our Florida place, WM provides Large, automated recycling and trash containers. Every week separate trucks come by and empty them without anyone having to handle them, and then gently sets them back down on the ground (normally on their side ).

A third truck comes by and hand-loads all lawn waste placed in containers. Twice a year we can have a claw truck do a large, bulk pickup of lawn waste, which, BTW, is needed.

We can set used electronics and appliances at "the curb" and WM will pick them up, too, if someone else already hasn't.

We can take hazardous wastes or any of the above to a nearby County transfer station if we want.

All covered by our property taxes, which aren't too bad if you are a resident, old, and impoverished like us.

Yeah, that would have been good for about 30 mostly redundant ad nauseam JLB posts. I would say most USA timeshares now have some kind of recycling program and I can't remember being at one in about a decade that did not have one of some kind.

We were just at Maui Hill. They have large trash bins out in several locations and they now also have recycle containers along side them.

I don't mind recycling at ts's when its the norm but it isn't anything we normally do at home.

I did the beach recycling survey during dogter's afternoon hot dog, soda, beach drive.

The resort does not appear to recycle . . . just one big dumpster.

The condo next door does not appear to recycle . . . just several green trash barrels "at the curb".

The rest of the beach residences/condos were mixed, some with just green trash barrels and some with both green trash and yellow recycling barrels.

I would conclude the more different groups/parties there are at a location, the less likely they will be asked to recycle. It's so much easier just to dump everything one place.

Recycling seems to be something that a person never thinks of not doing, or never thinks of doing. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

I heard you do that quite often to pick up some fee stuff.

I was at Williamsburg Plantation in November and they had recycling dumpsters prominently displayed. Their welcome packet promoted the recycling. This was the first time I noticed the effort at a timeshare. I will pay more attention in the future.
At home, we actively recycle metal, plastic and paper. We get a recycling pick up weekly.

No, "free" stuff, and yes, always looking. 5 bicycles now, and a bunch of lawn chairs. If we "upgrade" something, we put what it's replacing out at the curb, and it disappears.

I've wanted to pick up bicycles, repair them, and put them back, but DW won't let me.

We asked about recycling at Fox River when we stayed there 4-5 years ago and were told back then that they were working on it. In 25 years of time sharing the places that seemed to not recycle were by rivers, ocean, and mountains. Never could figure out why. Every time we have been told they're working on it.
Best recycling we ever ran into was on Vancouver Island. They even had composting going on.

What I said in #7: "Recycling seems to be something that a person never thinks of not doing, or never thinks of doing. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground."

Non-recyclers are never going to recycle, and they will fight those who try to. I don't know why that is, but it is,

I don't know if that is true. I usually do not recycle, and really never think about recycling, unless there is a notice somewhere I stay that says to recycle, in which case I have no problem abiding by the rules of the area and will be happy to recycle.

Actually, we do recycle some items like tires, car batteries, cans, bottles, cardboard, appliances, metal and paper and we also compost yard waste at the refuse transfer station when we have a large amount of stuff to be rid of. We don't separate items in our regular trash as there is no where for the recyclables.

We live on the California Central coast (San Luis Obispo area) and recycling is mandatory. They provide blue bins for recyclables and a greenwaste bin. We usually fill both and have almost no trash/garbage. I also return bottles and cans for the refund of the deposit. Lately there has been a mass closure of the recycling centers because the price of materials has dropped.

The Point at Poipu on Kauai has bins at multiple stations where you can recycle plastic, metal, glass and cardboard. I see many people using them throughout the week.

The resort has been bought by Holiday Inn Club and they are seeking to do some upgrades...hopefully this will be one of them. Will be back there in August, so we'll see...
