  • The 2006 Perseid meteor shower

"One of the best meteor showers of the year - the Perseids - will get washed out by a nearly full Moon this year. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try and enjoy them anyway. The Moon will be 87% full on Friday, August 11, rising after 10:00pm. Head out after it goes dark, and see if you can spot an Earth grazer; a special kind of meteor that can be very bright and slow, leaving a dramatic tail. After 10:00pm, only the brightest meteors will be visible." From www.universetoday.com

I remember seeing this a few years ago. It was an incredible spectacle here in New England. At that time they were coming close, fast and furious. It was about 3 am and I stood out in my yard. It was, no kidding, as if you could touch them they were so close. They will probably not come as close tonight as they did then, but just a peek will be a pleasure.
    Thanks for posting this info.

The first time I saw the Perseid meteor shower we were camping with a group of cub scouts. It was so neat seeing those little scouts get excited watching shoot stars. Sometimes you would see several at one time and they would be around you. It was unbelievable to see.

Exactly my experience ! They were so close and actually appeared to be around you. I remember them as being a golden-beige.

The last time, we set up lounge chairs in our front yard, laid back and enjoyed the show. Will probably try that this evening. We probably won't see the Earthgrazers because with this new daylight savings in Indiana, it doesn't get dark here until after 9:30 pm. and the article said to catch them before 10 pm.

          Thanks for the reminder.

In the central time zone set your alarm clock for midnight.

Well, the kids and I took a blanket out to try to see the shower. We saw a drip. We saw 2. But we didn't get out until 9:30, the moon was already pretty bright. Not to mention we are not exactly in the sticks, so not so great a night sky due to the lights.

It was still nice to lie quietly and cuddle with the kids. They are getting so big so fast. sigh.

Very impressive too from Joshua Tree National Park but I can't find the pictures anymore. Here are some others:
