  • What's More Important: Where You Go or When You Go?

Perhaps it is like the young lady who cuts off the end of the ham before she puts it in the roasting pan (will share story if requested), do we go places because we are accustomed to going there or going then, or both, and are we willing to change one or the other to deal with declining availability from the exchange companies?

I ask because we started going to SW FL in January because we did shows there then, that be high season for shows in Florida and off-season up north. Now we can't get the good resorts in January where we like to go.

We could adjust and go in December and could still get where we want. We would also be able to take advantage of lower prices for activities like golf. Or, we can still go in January, but to other places.

As January is the beginning of Snowbird Season in SW FL, I suspect we are not alone. You wait until Christmas with the family, then start getting around for the trip south.

If we went December 1, it just would not be the same.

If I had the luxury of going in early December, that's when I would go.

      Jim good Subject,

I go away when I can. I am stuck on Holidays and Summer. I still want to travel to where I want to go to. So I work around what is best on the times I can travel.

Don't know the answer. It probably depends. There are times I want to go, and sometimes there are place I want to go. Most time it is time decides I guess.

For your situation, I believe you have enough weeks to cover and flexible enough on the time. So you may want to do some testing to see if you like.

Pick the earilest time you think you can go and get the place you like, and cover the time you really want to go to any place based on avail.

Or Pick the latest time you think you want stay at the place you like and cover the time you usually fo with other places.

Who knows, maybe you like it and develop a new search routine. Or you don't like at all, and start bid to become an owner at the place you like and time you want.

We generally have a few ideas as to where we want to go and are reasonably flexible on that aspect. When we go is much more important. We don't want to travel during school holidays as it tends to be more expensive and there are loads of kids around (odd that second one, I never could work out why ) We generally prefer to travel June / early July or September / early October for our main holiday.

Sometimes when, sometimes where, sometimes both.

My work schedule has some flex in it most of the time. Now that I am an empty nester my travel plans will be even more flexible.

Sometimes its when. Everyone in the family is free at the same time.

Sometimes its where. Westin St Johns comes to mind, or one of my other top 30 timeshare resorts. A great unit size in a great timeshare resort might make me reevaluate my work schedule.

Sometimes its when and where. I try to stay in timeshares as much as possible for business trips and conferences. As soon as I find out locations and times for these I start looking for timeshare exchanges. The last one was Orlando in Oct., Next one is Boston in April and after that Hawaii in November 07.

                Both, neither, depends...

We don't tend to go the same places twice, and rarely have a Master Plan of exactly where or exactly when. I don't covet the most popular places - never been to Orlando and may never go.

We do like to avoid crowds so will mostly go off-season. I'll never go to the beach during spring break.

Generally, we just want to GO. We can have fun anywhere, any time.

My job is reasonably flexible so I can mostly arrange projects around my trips, or vice versa. I only recently booked May 07 for our 15th wedding anniv and would have put it off longer, except that a major project is threatening to heat up again and I needed to get my vacation in ahead of that timeline. This time, we only knew when and had a hard time deciding where.

It's about habit, not knowing why we do things.

A young lady was preparing the Christmas ham. She cut off the end of it and put it in the roasting pan and popped it in the oven. Then she wondered why she was wasting the good end, so she called her Mom.

"Mom, why did you always cut off the end of the ham when you put it in the pan?"

"Because Grandma did. Let me call her and find out why."

"Mom, why did you always cut off the end of the ham when you put it in the pan?"

"Because my pan was too small."

I think when is a matter of having kids in school, if that is an issue at all.

Not an issue for us anymore.

Hopefully, this is because the kids have grown up and moved out as opposed to getting rid of them another way.

I need BOTH at this stage in my life. I no longer can get both. I'm looking at alternatives.

PS I notice you focused on December availability and not February.

I used to think it would be tough to be an empty nester, and maybe it was in the beginning, a little. But now it is easy.
