  • Ebay and private listing-bidders' identities protected?

    What is this?

private listing - bidders' identities protected.

And why would anyone place a bid on this type of timeshare auction? How do I know the seller is not bidding against me?

I had problems a few years back where I was selling stuff and I had other people e-mailing the bidders telling them that they would sell them similar products for less OR that they could buy the item for less elsewhere.

As it ended up, I was selling collectable items that were worth 2-3x as much as the products that this person was sending them to AND this person knew it as they were trying to get these people to not bid.

I had one of my buyers forward the e-mails to me and I was not too happy but I more then got even (that in itself is a long story).

I am sure that the timeshare snake oil salesmen of the world would love to know who may be interested in buying a timeshare and perhaps that is a problem?

    Just a guess...

When ever we sell a unit on Ebay

we use private auctions. We started when many potential bidders told us that unless their ID was protected, they wouldn't bid and be harassed by others trying to sell their timeshares.
I know it seems creepy to not know who your bidding against, but since I know what I will pay, if it goes higher than that, it is just gone. And if a seller does this, they are still going to pay Ebay the $35 final fee along with having to relist for another $35+ . I think that being private keeps shill bidding down, I could be wrong of course.

Walt... If you know the unit's value to you and your willing to pay a fair price... what difference does it make ???.... I am tired of receiving bogus 'second chance' offers ... Joe Tragesser

Big Frank had someone capture his account a couple of weeks ago. Just this past weekend I had email confirmation of two 2nd chance offers on an item I had unsold on eBay, with a note for the bidders to contact them at a certain email address. Hiding Id's just helps protect us honest folks.

            Private Auctions

INTERESTING! I have no clue as to how you can find the email addresses of the bidders. I am curious, please advise!

I personally BELIEVE that the people who are using the private auctions are, in fact, bidding against themselves to drive up the price. If they outbid the potential buyer, they lose $35 - big deal!

I have MOST of the records for RCI point sales in the past year. Some of the people who have the silent auctions have the most bidders and get the highest price for their products. Their overall sell price, when taking into consideration amortization of the total purchase price plus closing costs and their "low" MF, very often makes the cost per point HIGHER than average.

At this time of year I do not have the time to go to my usual extremes and list examples of these "ploys". Perhaps after the 1st if a similar thread is posted.

Another example of the misconceptions that appear in MANY of these private listers is the multiple "letters" of praise and recommendations which are displayed. If you believe these were truly written by pleased customers, then I have a bridge . . .

This is very interesting. I had assumed it was a way for the seller to protect him/herself if they were going to use shiill bidding.
