  • pay for one bedroom or two

I bought a one bedroom 6/4. I was looking at some of the resorts and they have only 2 or 3 bedrooms, do you have to pay the upgrade since there is no 1 bedrooms?

  • #2
If you are exchanging you just pay the standard exchange fee and you can get upgraded even into a 3 bedroom if it available.

actually it depends on which company you are exchanging through.

You may only put a search in for your unit size but RCI won't charge for a unit upgrade nor will II if that is what matches your request..

Some of the independents do charge for a larger unit than the one you deposit with them.

I don't know if it is still the case with RCI, but in the past if you deposited a unit with maximum occupancy of 6 that was the maximum you could have even if they provided a unit that could sleep 8.

We have been very fortunate in being able to exchange into larger units through RCI. We have been very happy with these trades.

II goes with a "like for like" system, so you should ask for a sleep 6 and generally you can get it.

I have twice pulled 4 bdr units with my little 1 bdr unit using RCI.

A few years ago we put in a studio from the Donatello in San Francisco and exchanged into a 3 bedroom at the Cliff's on Kaui through RCI. I think it has more to do with demand and timing.

I use my 1 BR (WEEKS) deposits with RCI and very often (more often than not) get a 2 BR in exchange at no extra charge. But that isn't the case with at least two other trading companies (HTSE and Trading Places). Those companies have a surcharge if you want to trade into a larger unit. The surcharge applies even if the complex you are trading into ONLY has 2 BR units in the complex.

That's why I differ with many on the timeshare forums in my opinion of the RCI exchange fees (even after several fee increases over the years). I can exchange for a larger unit at a lower overall cost even with the higher RCI exchange fee.

I can never do the trade online though. I have gotten 2 brs with a studio with RCI but I did it over the phone. When they ask you how many people are with you be sure to say the larger amount.

RCI doesn't seem to follow a like-for-like exchanges. I have pulled a 3-bedroom with a 1-bedroom unit and a 3-bedroom with a 2-bedroom unit on many occasions. Others have reported pulling a 2-bedroom unit with a studio as well. I've not familiar enough with the other exchange companies to know how they operate.

I always do my RCI trades online and often get a 2BR unit for my 1BR deposit. I've seen 3 and 4 BR units pop up during searches as well. Same with the other exchange companies except they require an extra fee for the trade (which many would find acceptable if you are taking more people along.

                          With II the rule is
                          For an ongoing search:
if trading a 1 bd and the resort has 1 bd units that's what you get. BUT, if the resort has only 2 bd units, then you'll get a 2 bd without any upgrade fees etc.

For an real time online search:
Any unit which you can see as available, is yours if you want it.

For quite a few years now, I've only done my trading on line through RCI. I've consistantly pulled studio, 1 and 2 bedroom units with our 1 bedroom. I've even seen a 3 bedroom come into play. I don't think I'd ever take a studio, but I have gotten 2 bedroom units ~ and no there is no extra fee.

I'm surprised you could do it over the phone. The only way we were able to trade into a larger unit with RCI was when it was available on line!
