  • Whooo Hoooo! Going to be a Laguna Surf owner!

I'm jumping up and down because we're going to be owners at a resort that I've been looking to buy in for about a year now! Finally was able to get the deal I was looking for (Better than ebay). I wasn't sure DW was going to ok it but she loves the city and area as well so, I got the ok.

Emmy, looking forward to joining you as a proud owner.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

That's great news! I guess good things come to those who wait (I wouldn't know ).... Emmy sure loves that place, undoubtedly you will too.

      Enjoy!!

        Gordon that is GREAT!
I know how much you love it there as I do and Emmy. I've never seen one that would monetarily make sense for us. Maybe as an owner you will be able to find me a "deal" too!

Now tell me how did you get DW to go along with it?

Is it an even unit summer week???

        Details! I want details!

Gordon, congratulations. I know you wanted this. Yes, we love the resort but most of all the location and the spectacular ocean view if you end up in an oceanfront unit (even numbers). We have owned here since it was a hole in the ground (1983) so we feel that we got our money's worth but you picked up a bargain so good for you. What season did you buy?

Lawren, all units are floating units so you may end up in the front or in the back but there are only two seasons. The "Laguna Surf" season is from the second half of June to the middle of September. The rest is considered "Laguna Coast" season which we have so not as good for exchanging but it was never our intention to exchange. We wouldn't go to Laguna Beach in the summer if they paid us but if you have children in school, then you have no choice. The coastal cities are so very busy here in the summer and the beach is very crowded and it is hard to find parking too and the restaurant lines are long.

The only problem is that it is becoming more difficult each year to reserve an oceanfront unit as there is so much demand for it. There are only 18 oceanfront units and 7 on the back (road side). Everyone loves to sit on their private balcony and enjoy watching the ocean and especially a beautiful sunset too. Nothing is nicer than to share this with your family or friends. We have seen so many different sunsets over the years.

I know that you will enjoy it too, Gordon.

Nice. Great place. Hope you got an even numbered unit.

Nobody owns even or uneven units, John. They are all floating but the difference in price was if you bought during the summer months or during the rest of the year. There was a $5,000 difference in price when we bought in 1983, if I remember correctly.

I have no idea what prices are today but there was a long list for buying a summer week from the HOA. I don't know how it stands now.

If Gordon got a summer week, he did very well. Let us know, if you are willing to share.

Lawren, DW loves the area as she goes surfing there. Laguna Surf is a block down the street from the surf shop she took lessons from and is right near where she goes surfing when we're there. Since I check prices constantly, I have a good idea of what the going rate is. In this instance, timing and opportunity seemed to coincide.

We picked up a non-summer week. We typically stay close to home during the summer (everyone wants to go to Banff and we're right there). So the unit works great for us. Most owners that are looking to sell check with the board to get an idea of pricing so it doesn't vary much, but does occasionally.

Summer weeks are currently selling for around $12K. There are 2 that are currently listed, although I talked with one owner today and that one has a pending offer. That's what the resort recommends to their owners to sell at. Non-summer weeks' asking price is $6K. Typically, there's not a lot of deviation from that. I did notice 2 ebay auctions this past year that sold for less than that.

                    Congratulations!!

I love that resort too - at least the view. I haven't been inside but have stood in the back and looked at that gorgeous view - I'd love to try it sometime but even if I could get an exchange, I'm afraid exchangers would be on the road side so we usually stay at NCV. Maybe someday... we did get an exchange into Laguna Surf for Christmas one year, but my DH wouldn't go for it - we went to NCV instead, but I Love Laguna Beach

Believe it or not but exchangers here get what the owners deposit in RCI, II or SFX. When an owner makes his reservations 13 months out, he chooses the unit he wants to occupy and that is marked on his confirmation.

This is how it was set up from the very start but only when you book a full week. They do not guarantee it when you book a partial week. However, very seldom will an oceanfront unit be deposited because most owners here bought for use or they may rent it out.

Also, this resort never charges extra fees to the exchanger unless the owner pays it too outside his maintenance fees. We pay for extra parking. That's how all exchanges used to be when we first bought in 1983 but many resorts have these extra charges now for non-owners besides downgrading the view the owner was entitled to. I don't like this practice nor some of the other changes either that took place over the years.
