  • Williamsburg in May

I will be going to Williamsburg in May and I noticed on another thread lots of websites to check on. Does anyone have any suggestions of places to go that they really enjoyed and shouldn't be missed when we are there? I have never been in that area so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Tammy

Do you like Shopping? there are some great Outlet's there. For a different type of outlet check out the I think it was the Pottery barn, To make sure it is the right one , I do recall Peperidge farm being there.

As far as parks, There is Bush Gardens, Water country, Kings Dominion.

Food wise to many to list but do try Sal's

Plenty of History there, Jamestown and in the Williamsburg town itself you can walk through most of it including the church and cemetery.

I believe the shopping area Frank is talking about is the Pottery Factory. There are also outlets on Richmond road west of town. You have to pick what you want to see and what you can bypass as there is so much to do. Personally, I could spend the whole week in Colonial Williamsburg. I don't particularly like Busch Gardens there- too many rollercoasters. There always the option of VA beach for a day, the plantation houses, Jamestown, Yorktown, golfing. If you can't find enough to keep you busy there, you must have a very limited agenda for vacations.

There are a couple of Taverns in the Historic District that serve "period" food that shouldn't be missed. I know that one is Kings Tavern but I can't recall the other's name. Christiana Campbells is a restaurant that George Washington was said to have enjoyed a few meals in. It's not inexpensive but I didn't find it horribly expensive either. Both the food and atmosphere make it a must IMO.

Buy the pass for the Historic district (name escapes me for some odd reason right now) and go into the museums to see how life was back before the revelotionary war.

Jamestown has the national park, which we found mildly interesting and a museum which we spent the better part of the day wandering around.

Most timeshares offer a day trip by bus to Washington DC. They generally hit the highlights and you'll spend time walking around the monuments. There is also generally an hour or two of free time which is just enough to get a taste of one of the many Smithsonian museums around the mall.

The last two times we've been there we've gone a little out of the way and driven to Gettysburg to spend the night. I don't think I'll ever tire of walking that battlefield. It is a long drive and will take at least two days and one night of your trip so, if you've never been to Williamsburg I don't really recommend it unless your a civil war buff or a huge fan of American history.

This year Jamestown will celebrating its 400th Anniversary 1607-2007.
All the exhbits and the Jamestown Fort have been spruced up.

Plus the Queen of England will be visiting Williamsburg and Jamestown in May.

Places to visit I would include Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, Jamestown Settlement, Historic Jamestowne (the first permanent English settlement 1607), Yorktown Victory Center, Williamsburg Winery, and some local plantations(Berkeley, Shirley, Edgewood, North Bend, Piney Grove and Westover).

Shopping: Village Shops at Kingsmill, Patriot Plaza, Wallace's Trading Post, Williamsburg Outlet Mall and the famous the Williamsburg Pottery.

Dinning: Colonial Williamsburg Taverns: Full Service, King's Arms Tavern and Christiana Campell's Tavern; plus casual dining Chowing's Tavern and Shield Tavern. For Reservations, call 1-800-HISTORY.

A leisurely drive along the Colonial Parkway is pretty neat, It's about 23 miles and connects Jamestown to Yorktown with exits in between (if you dont want to take the full drive) Viginia Beach is nice, with an awesome boardwalk. I found the book- Insiders guide Williamsburg and the historic triangle,an exellent source for things to do in and around the area.

                  Jamestown 400th Anniversary Celebration

Depending on when you're going to be there in May, you may want to check out the Jamestown 400th Anniversary Celebration, May 11-13, 2007.

Shields Tavern was the one I couldn't remember. We've had a couple of very nice lunches in there.

Yorktown also has the Yorktown Victory center which we found mildly interesting about the revelotionary war. Yorktown itself was somewhat interesting but we both prefered Jamestown to Yorktown.

There is a great hands on discovery museum on the waterfron in Virgina Beach called "Natalus" (sp?) I was there about 8 years ago, but I remember it being very nice.

Sadly, I find Colonial Williamsburg to be a little boring and WAY TOO HOT!!!. It is like a little desert in the summer with almost no shade. It needs a disney type company to run it.
