I've been researching selling my timeshare and I get the very clear impression that it's a difficult undertaking. However, I have to try. So, what is the best way to go about trying to sell my timeshare? I know that there are a lot of scams out there and I know not to pay upfront for anything. But does anyone have any input about reputable companies to deal with for timeshare resales? Thanks

As for "reputable" companies, I am sure there are some, but have you tried just posting an ad in the local paper of the area in which you own? Or posted an add on the bulletin board of the resort? Or contacted the HOA and asked for what other members do? There are many ways to "sell"...ebay, redweek.com, here we have a classified section.
The key to selling is to price it correctly, and as you said NEVER pay upfront to get rid of it.
There are several companies who are "making offers" in areas around the country, but what they really do is invite you to hear the offer, and then they "offer to take it off your hands for fees." I would post their names here but I don't want to give them free advertising.
In the long run, you end up paying them money, and they end up dumping it for the cheap.
Just ask yourself? Who in your family might want the TS? Is there some friend who might enjoy this? You could also rent the week each year....
Do some more research and definitely seek out what is the best method for you to sell it, give it to charity, or give it to a friend or family member for use.Life is short, live it with this awareness.

Quite a few buyers purchase their timeshares off ebay, so you will find a number of sellers on there. Most of the sellers have a link on the page offering to purchase your timeshare. As katiemack pointed out, some of them will try to take advantage of you, so be careful. If your only goal is to get out from under the MF, I would try to post an ad on here. If you are looking to make money, be honest about the value of that unit. I would track similar items on ebay and see what prices they bring.

It will depends on the TS you try to sell and who you project the buyer group maybe if you don't plan to sell it yourselves. Someplace it is easier to be with a local agent since most of the transactions happens when someone vacation there, beach places seems usually be the case, but the cost usually is high. Some resort chains have few agents that specialist in that chain. I believe if you own DVC, HGVC, FF there are people that can tell you who to talk to.
If you try to sell it yourself, you can post it here (with points/credit you earn by post/joint), you can post in Timeshare Rentals Resales Timeshares for Sale Rent Vacation Time Share, craigslist: san francisco bay area classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events they are free. I believe bidshare was free, you need to make sure you have enough reservation since it has low traffic. You can post on redweek, Welcome to www.tug2.org and myresortnetwork, they have min. charge. And you can put on eBay with ad that includes some good reputable closing company to do the transaction after all is done and no result.
A lot of times, you can go to vacation, talk to people in the resort pool or in the activity center causually, and if they happen like the resort but don't own there, you can have chance to sell to them.

I used Timeshare Rentals and Timeshare Resales By Owner - My Resort Network. At the time it was free but I understand there is a small fee now. It was very easy and took about three months. You deal via email with the buyer and write your own ad and post your own price. It cost me nothing as the closing and recording is paid by the buyer.
Stay away from the people that call you first and the people that say they will pay cash for your place.
Good luck !
