Need Help Fast Re: Resale Purchase

Not sure if this is correct forum to post this, but here goes.

Just bought t/s on ebay thru seller "timeshareweb". Rec'd paperwork via email, which I will be faxing back tomorrow with signatures. I was wondering, for those buying resale, have you provided your social security # on paperwork that goes to escrow/closing company? It says "optional, but many resorts will not transfer title without social security number(s)". I'd hate not to include our #'s if it will delay processing the paperwork, but just don't feel comfortable providing them.

The closing company is "Timeshare Closing Services, Inc." which I believe is a reputable company from posts on TUG (unfortunately TUG is down, or I'd also be posting this on that site).

It is not unusual to have to provide your SS# when you transfer ownerships. Many times the resorts themselves require it to establish you as the owner in their records.

Last time we purchased from ebay, we called the resort directly, and gave them our SS #'s. It worked out fine, and there were no delays.

I rarely give out my SS #. It realy has to be important for me to give that # out. If the form says Optional then I don't give it.

Think I'll take my chances and not include our #'s. I checked our last two resale purchases and one had our SS#'s included, and one didn't.

We bought an eBay resale April 27, and the seller specified Timeshare Closing Services. The paperwork asked for the SS#, which I left blank assuming someone would call if they really needed it. Never heard another word. Sometimes they took 2-3 days to reply to voice mail or email, but everything went pretty much as the schedule they laid out. Coincidently, we received the deed today.

I suggest just return the papers without your SS#.

Our contract said the SS# was optional. I called the resort directly and asked if they needed it. They said they preferred having it but did not need it. We left it blank and had no problem.

I never give out SS# unless someone is going to pay me. The only reason the resort should have it would be in the case of them renting your unit for you.

Tony G's answer hits the nail on the head, although indirectly. A non-governmental entity cannot lawfully require you to provide a social security number (they can always ask for it, but cannot actually require it) unless the transaction is one which involves mandated state and/or IRS tax reporting. On the other hand, when money / loans are involved, a lender can lawfully decline to conduct business with you if you decline to provide a social security number. Truth to tell, most non-governmental entities only want your social security number in order to facilitate their collection proceedings in the event of later non-payment / default issues.

Thanks to all for responding! We are faxing the paperwork to Timeshare Closing Services today and NOT including our SS#'s. Figured if it takes a week or two longer to close because they ask for it later, shouldn't be a big deal as our usage doesn't start until 2008. So far, timeshareweb has been VERY helpful in answering emails very promptly. Also rec'd courtesy call from them confirming they had emailed the paperwork to us and to let them know if we had not rec'd it. Wasn't expecting that. We'll see how fast the turn around is in getting the completed deed/paperwork.

Can't believe how addicting this t/s'ing is!!! Anyone else spend every day on ebay scouting out deals?!?!?!?

We sometimes put the timeshare Ebay listing on this site. Every time you would refresh your page here you get a new auction. We may add it back soon.

Let me add that you should carefully watch this transaction thru TS closing. I have had 2 closing through them and found them to be sloppy and slow.

They seems to be associated with so called post card company. So sometimes it does become slow and they have difficult to put a good paperwork. Make sure you review all the work they send back, and call resort to make sure the transaction go through.
