    What are the 10 best locations for trading power? U.S. or worldwide

  • #2
    I hope this is okay to publish as I just copied it from Tug. If not, mods kindly delete, but the top 30 rated timeshares are listed below. There is a correlation between these and the 10 best places for trading due to their desirability.

    Again, places and weeks are the key !

    I would throw in London and New York, too.
    I realize that this doesn't answer your query exactly, but it does feed into it.
    Good question.

        TUG's quality rating score . The rating is achieved by members who have stayed there and scored the quality based on several categories; cleanliness, service, condition of unit, location, ammenities, etc.

        A ten would be perfect. A 0-3 would be condemmned-dismal, etc.

          thanks,

          does TUG rate all timeshares worldwide.
          are there separate ratings for winter, summer, fall, spring?
          How would I find out about Massanutten's rating? or any other ts for that matter?

            This information requires a TUG membership which is about $15. It is money well spent.
            I'd give you more info, but I may be violating Tug's bylaws. Sorry.

              There is a recent review of Massanutten. It has a decent rating of 7.86 based on several reviews, the most recent being Feb-Mar -08.

                The best places to vacation (high ratings on TUG, for example) certainly matter a great deal if you plan to vacation at the resort yourself regularly. But these may actually NOT be the best places for owning, to trade OUT (trade power) regularly.

                Resort quality, location, unit size, week# or season, guest reviews, brand name - MANY more things go into trade power than just the guest experience, luxury features or brand name/awards which seem to heavily influence TUG ratings. Also, highly rated (generally more upscale) resorts tend to have some of the highest purchase prices and maintenance fees in the industry! That makes them LESS desirable to own when planning to use regularly as a trade week.

                The "10 Best" for trading will not be named properties. People who've found trading gems don't want to sabotage their own trading by sharing too much info about it. A great trader is great largely because the exchange company gets fewer deposits than requests for that resort and week. When people boast in a public forum of great trade power, it encourages lots of others seeking great traders to buy there, and deposit their weeks for trading, thus increasing inventory and potentially decreasing trade power. Gotcha!

                Just look for whatever is obviously most appealing to the masses, where there is limited supply of timeshares.

                *** School break and major holiday prime weeks at high quality resorts ***
                Limited supply of timeshare resorts in appealing vacation destinations;
                Summer, accessible beachfront weeks (California, the Carolinas - drive-to, not tied to air travel);
                Ski holiday weeks in the Rockies, especially ski-in/ski-out;
                Southwest FL during snowbird season;
                Upper midwest during summer;
                Urban locations during good touring weather, spring or summer;
                If a brand name has many resorts in places where you'd like to visit, consider buying with them - the exchange companies often boost trade power when trading into a sister resort or you may be able to trade internally without even using an exchange company;
                Other than peak leaf-peeping in certain locations, avoid most autumn weeks.

                HTH!

                  Looking at the top 10 there would indicate that Cancun was clearly the best place to own in the world. Not so, they just happen to have 4 great resorts there. The best locations is a bit vague- as location is one thing and the time period at that location is another. Cape Cod is a great trader- but mainly in summer- try giving away a mid January week there. What is really important is demand at a location during a time period. Demand is important, but so is supply. Orlando has a lot of demand-but it's a pretty easy trade with supply of around 100 resorts , including several of the world's largest.
                  If one is looking to own at an ideal place for trading, they should also consider year-round demand as low or no demand seasons can place a cost burden on the rest of the year in some cases.

                    All good advise but from my research the best trading power comes from:

                    Cape Cod - Summer
                    Coastal California - Summer
                    Colorado Ski - Winter (Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge)
                    Myrtle Beach - Summer
                    Virginia Beach - Summer
                    Florida Panhandle - Summer
                    In Vino Veritas

                      Right -- TUG's top 30 resorts are highest in resort quality. Trade power and quality are two entirely different things. In fact, RCI not only doesn't seem to boast trade power based on quality, its system actually reduces the trade potential of high quality resorts, by preventing them from trading into lower quality resorts.

                      In terms of high trade power, there are a number of good posts here. SoCal summer, upper midwest summer, Cape Cod summer, London and New York, Hawaii -- all strong. However, some of these locations are too expensive to be cost effective as traders.

                        As well there are "specialty" weeks that rent and trade very well, such as Scottdale/Phoenix and Florida units during March baseball spring training, etc.

                          the # in the (75) is the number of people who rated the resort

                          The rating number which is based on a scale of 1-10 would be 9.2 or 7.8

                            The list Beags posted is where people WANT to trade into - and also the ones that are rated the highest.

                            I would add Caribbean week 51-52, 1-14
                            Northeast Coast summer
                            Locations near National Parks in summer
                            Ski Resorts out west weeks 51-52, 1-12

                            And then there are the Hotel Chains that have priority internal trading...Marriott, Starwood, Hyatt, HGVC, DVC

                              I'm not sure I understand you. The original poster asked for resorts or locations with high trading power. I don't think TUG's list of the 30 highest rated resorts really tells one much about trading power. I own at the Disney Vacation Club, but I doubt its trading power is all that high. There is currently no way to search online using the DVC, so I can't say for sure, but I definitely can (and do) trade into the DVC with just a moderate trader. If II will give me the DVC with just a moderate trader, I don't see how the DVC resorts can have very high trade power. I can trade into many of the other resorts in the TUG top 30 list with the same moderate trader. The others in the top 30 that I can't see are generally ones with internal trading preference. (I also can't use this moderate trader to see either of the Four Seasons, but that's probably a quality issue.)

                              So, even though people may enjoy staying at a particular resort, that's no guarantee of high trade power.
