  • Do you tip at your resort?

When staying at a resort in which you either own or exchange into, do you tip the housekeeper?
I tend to tip more when they clean everyday as opposed to only at the beginning of the stay or end depending on how you look at it.
What do you do and what is the average if you do tip?

I always leave a tip, $5 if they do not do the room and $10 if they make up the rooms daily.

Yes, if we remember. $10 or $20.

I am in a tipping position at a resort in my summer job, and many don't tip. Yesterday the opening crew split $8 (2 ways). I closed and we split $60, also two ways.

Some days we split zero, some days $200. Some tip us zero, some $20 (each).

      Go figure.

Oh yeah, I keep my tips for our January FL trip, and give it to people there doing the same thing I do.

        Yes. Always.

Amount varies for size of unit and frequency of cleaning.

ie. A 2BDRM unit with daily, trash and straightening, bed making, I leave $5/day. If only once during the week. $10 at mid-week and $10 at check-out. If no service $10 at check-out.

Smaller sizes units I leave less.

I always tip. If the room is done daily I tip daily since it will be different cleaners on different days. If I know there will be a mid-week clean I leave the tip then for that cleaner; that way I am ensured that the person doing the work gets the tip. We always leave a tip at the end of the stay too.

Having been in a position where tips were a large portion of my earnings I tend to over tip (at least according to DH).

I have not tipped in the past, but will in the future after seeing this thread.

I always tip when there is daily service but never tip when there is no service.
Not sure but why would anyone tip when there is no service.

I figure that part of my extensive fees including exchange fee should give me the expectation of a clean room when I arrive and they need to clean the room for the next exchanger when I leave.

I guess if my family didn't stay for a week there would be no need to restock, or vacuum, or change the linens, empty the dishwasher, clean the bath(s) and restock the towels.

So yes we do tip for "no" service. I have to think anyone who has worked in an industry where the main portion of their income was tips does tip.

I appreciate that I come from a culture where tipping for everything is not the norm, so it's good to see somebody who agrees with my logic about not tipping when a service isn't provided. Exchange fees and maintenance fees should cover all the weekly preparation costs. Tipping would be for any service I receive over and above that.

If no one stayed there, there would be no reason for a paycheck since there would be no work for them to do. They do get paid to perform a service. Above and beyond does warrant tipping.

I tip if I receive service from somebody. So if they do at least a "trash and tidy" or towel change while I am there I will tip. If there is no service other than the unit being clean when I arrive, which I expect, then I do not tip. That's not a service that has been performed for me. That's a service that is done no matter if the unit is occupied or not.

I'm a pretty good tipper, but I have standards. For example, if I ride a shuttle bus at the airport or from a hotel to the airport, as long as they help me with my bag I tip them (many people do not). But if they don't touch my bag, then they don't get to touch my money either.

We get daily maid service at the Royal Caribbean in Cancun. The maids don't make alot of money and they are incredible. We tip them at least $3 a person per day. When we arrive we give her $20, then give the rest at the end of the week.

This is an interesting thread. I had been led to believe that tipping was rare in timeshares unless some extra service was provided. With Wyndham all reservations require a certain amount of housekeeping credits. I'd like to hear some more responses about this.

I always leave a tip for the housekeeper whether I am staying at a hotel, extended stay hotel/apartment, or timeshare. Bellmen, shuttle drivers, etc. also are tipped for service. That is factored into my travel costs and I always leave home with plently of smaller denominated bills. There have been a few times when the housekeeper left a thank you note, but I never expect one.
