  • When would Spring break dates be for 2010

Hre in the NY metro area the public schools tend to have a spring week off that covers Passover and Easter.

Here are the 2010 dates for those religious observences:

Mar 30 First day of Passover (Jewish)
    Apr 1 Maundy Thursday (Christian)
    Apr 2 Good Friday (Christian)
Apr 2 Pascua Florida Day (FL)
    Apr 3 Holy Saturday (Christian)
Apr 4 United Nations' Mine Awareness Day
    Apr 4 Orthodox Easter (Orthodox)
    Apr 4 Easter Sunday (Christian)
    Apr 5 Easter Monday (Christian)
Apr 6 Last day of Passover (Jewish)

Mar 30 is a Tuesday. The kids are always off Maunday Thursday and Good Friday as well as Easter Monday.

My guess is the schools will be closed week 13 the last week of March for 2010.

Makes sense, but could it be...... If Passover is the week following Easter, the schools will be closed Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the following week.

Neveremind.....Yeah, they will want to close for the start of passover.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

That is why I'm hesitating Angela. I did guess wrong once when this happened. I believe the FIRST day of Passover is the biggie though, so better odds for week 13.

Just saw some GM Cabos for those weeks. Not a huge Mexico fan but I hear nice things about Cabo.

Yeah, after thinking about it, I tend to agree. The schools will be closed for the start of Passover. Now, the private schools may have the other scenario, but not the public schools, I wouldn't think.

Cabo does sound nice. I've never been either, but have friends that just love it.

In California the vacation dates can vary by school districts....our school district dates are:

Last day of school: April 1, 2010
          Holiday: April 2-11, 2010
Return to school: April 12, 2010

Our county recently went to a "standard" break, separated from religious observances. It is now the week starting the first Monday in April, every year.

Huh. For some reason I thought that the Eastern and Western churches calculated Easter differently. On Googling, I guess they do - in 2013 the Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday is May 5th, and the Western March 31st - bit of a difference there!

I think you're right that the first two days of Passover are generally viewed as more important, but I think in the U.S. the first two and the last two days are "Full Festival" days, meaning observant Jews aren't supposed to be working.

Anyhow... If you're trying to avoid the crowds, some website I ran across this past week suggested counting the two weeks either side of the Western Church Easter Sunday as risky, arguing that most public school systems in the US will give the kids "Passover/Easter week" off, but whether that's the week before or the week after Easter Sunday varies. What private schools do is a whole 'nother animal.

Our (public) schools are closed the week of April 12-16.

The schools are also closed for ski week (Presidents' Week), so I think they are trying to space out the vacations.
