  • I donated my timeshare to charity and got a tax deduction for 09

I found a charity fundraising company that actually seems to do what they promise to do. This company took my timeshare and donated it to charity. They have about a dozen charities they work with. The Cancer Society sent me a receipt and I will be deducting the donation on my 2009 Federal Return. I have to estimate the value but I'm not going to be greedy. They did charge me a fee but it was less then 1 year of my maintenance fee and now I am free forever!

They actually deliver and you aren't charged until the donation is finalized and you no longer own the property.

The company is Property Donation Group and their website is Donate Your Timeshare To Charity and Enjoy A Great Tax Deduction

This person is PDG posting from a year back pushing there company with false info here BF

So color me suspicious, but you joined this group just to tell us that ?

Charitable contributions can only be deducted if the organization has charitable status. You will also need a statement or a form 1098-c from the charitable organization if the deduction is over $ 500. If your total donation is over $ 5,000, you may also have to get appraisals of the property value.

Not only that, but when the charity sells the timeshare, they will file a 1098 C reflecting the actual amount it sold for.

If that charity does not work with someone who knows how to sell your particular timeshare, then you will get a much lower deduction.

I work with a charity for people who want to donate Bluegreen points to charity. I usually find a buyer first so that all the paperwork is in order and the donor knows definitively what they will be able to deduct on their return. It makes it cleaner for everyone.

Thread with info about timeshare donation companies..

        http://www.timeshareforums.com/forum...-work-you.html

Unfortunately, they aren't always the answer people hope for.. I looked at the website from the OP- but it's pretty generic.. No address, no 501C info, no specifics.. They link to Resort Closings so I would assume it is simply another lead generation site for Donateforacause, but I'll try to verify if possible.

another one of those posters for whom we could adapt the tongue-twister:

She shills 1098C shells on the seashore.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

          “You shouldn't wear that body.”

Dont expect much in the way of a deduction. The IRS knows the true value of an unwanted t/s. The joy of the thing is knowing you dumped it!

Here is an interesting thread about this theme about a question I asked on TUG. Thought you might find it entertaining.
