The good thing about a timeshare is that you will take a vacation because you already paid for it. So many people have vacation time but never go away. They miss so much.
The problem is Emmy that people's lives constantly change. They get married, have kids, kids grow up, jobs change, marital status changes. I have bought one that I intend to use EOY and no matter where I am in my life I don't see that changing. The rest are exchange only because I like new places.

Christine you are welcome. The great thing about this forum is that we all love to share what we know.

I was a weeks devotee until I started seriously playing with different points systems. They all seem to have their strong areas as well as weaknesses. Some I don't know at all yet but I'll get there. Of the ones I am familiar with I think WorldMark is best. If I lived on the left coast I'd seriously consider it. The only thing I don't like about that one is no discount under 60 days.

RCI Points are pretty easy to exploit if you can go somewhere last minute. I've had a rare NJ shore location on hold 3 times this week before I came to my senses. It was SUCH a BARGAIN though.

Wyndham seems to be busy destroying whatever value it had as a points system. It's expensive on regular bookings and the 60 day window is a crapshoot at best. They've even devalued trade power within RCI. Can't purchase to transfer points between accounts. I wouldn't touch them.

I'd like to get more familiar with BlueGreen and Diamond.

TSing is all I do. But what Gord says is perfectly true. I have gone to some places I never would have considered if we didn't timeshare and now I'm lusting after a couple of places because I've seen them recently. Like that WYN Wanaka in New Zealand...

We have 3 floating weeks (all at same resort)
795,000 Wyndham points which are a combination of 4 converted weeks and a 375,000 UDI contract (could book 1-3 weeks depending on resort and season) or many, many weeks using RCI deposits.

Our biggest problem now is more timeshare than hubby can get off work. That and our motorhome hasn't gotten much use the past couple of years since I went on a TS shopping spree a couple years ago . We still use it for local weekend camping but no long trips. But the timeshares do let us take the kids and grandkids on vacations they could not afford. The MH would be a bit cramped.

Any suggestions for a newbie to the rental business?
        Thanks.
It's all about supply and demand. I have several weeks in Aruba for high demand weeks all with great access and views to beach and or pool which I can rent out to offset all of my maintenance fees. The rest of my weeks have no rental value so I trade them with RCI and II. It's a great way to enjoy four weeks a year of great vacations for almost no cost. Once I retire I plan on using some of my Aruba weeks so I can get away during the cold winters in NY.

Maybe you can give me a link to where you have already answered this question. I ask because I am considering adding a Wyndham points to my collection but I also like Bluegreen and have stayed at some that I liked. But I want one that has Big cities in it's collection like Wyndham.
I agree with you about Marriott. They just raised the points for a nights stay so I am using 80,000 points just to stay 2 nights in Bostons Custom House. (ouch).
In general, I recommend that people purchase a resort group where they like the resorts. If you have a pre-disposition for Wyndham resorts, I would stick with that resort group. I own a lot of points in Wyndham and go to Wyndham resorts all the time. Can't lose with the right purchase.

I own a lot of timeshares. At one time, I owned more than 100. I think now I am in the 80 range.

Here are the types of ownerships I have:

            1) Bluegreen Points
            2) Pono Kai 2br flex week
            3) Christmas Mountain Village UDI
            4) RCI Points
            5) WorldMark
            6) Wyndham
            7) HGVC
            8) Orange Lake Country Club
            9) Marriott

I am in the market for an SVO and another Marriott or two. I'll probably pick up some Disney, Diamond and Shell Vacation Club points just to round out the portfolio. I just want to have enough ownership types to get anywhere I want whenever I want.

Wow!!!!!I know you do this for a living and probably rent out alot of your stuff. After all there are only 52 weeks a year and you must be a road warrior too.
I like your kind of business because I think you can take your business with you on a laptop and be successful. Are you hiring?

I really like Solara Surfside and that is why I was considering getting some Bluegreen because I never see it available as a trade or rental in the times that I want. Maybe because my unit doesn't have enough trading power. I usually try to use my Ft. Lauderdale beach resort week #24- 1 bedroom. So I'll read more in your Forum. Thanks.

                    Christine,

I'll send you a private message to give you some options for getting to Solara surfside for cheap.

Solara Surfside isn't deposited much because it is a favorite location for Bluegreen owners and so they don't deposit it much. Owners decide what gets deposited, not Bluegreen.

Each time I read this topic, it kinda irks me, cuz I'm the process of paying 6 maintenance fees for stuff we cannot use.

In fact, that is on my list of stuff to do this putin' session.

                          1 fixed annual
                          1 floating annual
                          1 floating EEY
                          Wyndham points

Down 4 from last year. We were renting out and giving away 2-4 weeks a year. So we now own approximately what we can use. Would like to own more points, either more Wyndham or maybe Bluegreen. But I hesitate because we really can't use more.

This is so interesting to see all the timeshares people own. I thought we owned a lot---7 floating, plus bonus weeks, and they are enough for us. I'm thinking of getting rid of one of them.
