        Drive to

Drive if we can. Depends on destination, how much time off we have, and air deals. We get 5 weeks a year vacation and own 3 standard timeshares and 1 group. The group is Worldmark so we drive to mostly because we are in Calif. as are most Worldmarks.
When we fly we either like to fly a long distance or plan on staying more then a week. Florida is usually a two weeker, Texas was a two weeker.
When we drive, everything comes with us for our convenience.

I am with you. We always do 2 weeks when flying to Mexico or New York City. I don't like the waiting in lines and having to adhere to a schedule when flying. We don't take much with us other than the necessities either driving or flying. I don't like driving all that much but do like the flexibility of doing what we want when we want. We don't have any time constraints so we take our time, rarely driving more than 200 miles per day. We like to stop by early afternoon so we can relax and do some sight seeing.

From 1997 - 2006 we used to drive back and forth between San Diego and the San Francisco Bay area every month. We lived in both places and went back and forth between our homes. We always took at least 2 days each way, usually stopping at Solvang for the night.

We always flew to vacation because DH hates long car trips. But then, I forgot to spacebank a week and it was too late to get any kind of affordable air fare, so we HAD to drive 12 hours or lose the week...my bad, but did we have fun! DH had to admit afterwards that the driving wasn't all that bad and flying wouldn't have been much faster (we would've spent a minimum of 8 hours on flying figuring in travel to the airport, getting there 1.5 hours in advance, flight time, and layover time between the two flights). Plus, the airport was another 1.5 hours to our destination! It was great having our own vehicle, and the savings...wow, the Honda used a tank going down and a tank coming back, so about $50 out of pocket versus around $1000 with airfare and car rental.

(sheesh, car rentals have really gotten expensive...but that's another topic!)

Since then we've done one TS trip about 7 hours away, and are looking forward to the Wyndham Great Smoky vacation that Mapquest says is about 7.5 hours.

We always go to Florida for three weeks in the winter, and I'd love to drive there. Not sure I can talk DH into that one since it would be a very long trip (we'd have to do it over 2 or 3 days each way, which would add a lot to our time away from home). But eventually....

Mostly we fly, even though my husband has some major anxiety issues when it comes to flying. We used to stay in puerto vallarta hotels but then my brother and his wife suggested we go in on a time share together.
I would love to drive but I have heard way to many horror stories of the corrupt policia confiscating cars, money and tossing unsuspecting tourists in jail for a few days. I think the drive would be beautiful but It's not worth the risk.

I agree with you. Living in the Northeast there is nothing worthwhile to drive to as far as I am concerned. Let someone out there set me straight?

I have to fly. NC is driveable but I don't think I can convince DW to do the 10 to 14 hr drive.

                Me, I am a flyboy.

As most of you can tell by now I have caught the west coast bug.
I'm a former Mainer, and still a Mainer at heart, and we loved to drive to vacations in Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, the Maine shore, the mountains of Vermont...
Anyway, if it's reasonable driving distance, say 10 hours or so, we prefer to drive, and that way we can take whatever we want to take. Otherwise we fly, putting up with the hassles for that new vacation site...
