  • If you could be in on the design planning.....

of the next new timeshare development, what architectural elements would you suggest to the builder?

What things would you like to see (or not see) in the unit or on the property?

Funny that you should ask this. A friend that I travel with frequently and I always critique each timeshare we stay at. Even though they are always very nice, there is always something that should have been designed differently in the unit.

For instance, I think it is at Marriott Newport Coast where the shower door opens the wrong way and it is difficult to get around the door to get in the shower. Poor design.

Likewise, at Wyndham Nashville, in the unit we were in, you could not reach the dishes in the cabinet because it was set so far back over the counter. Even my friend who is 5'8" had to get on a chair. We mentioned it to the person who dropped by with our "update" and he said he had heard that comment before, but that all units were not the same design as ours.

I'd take the jacuzzi tubs out of the unit, and replace them with huge showers, similar to Marriott's SurfWatch. I'd then put the jacuzzi outside on the new, improved, larger deck/balcony, equipped with it's own BBQ.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

One thing that I really like about where I own is that the units are only 2 per building. Basically like a townhouse style duplex. There are no such thing as upstairs or downstairs neighbors. I really dislike the apartment style units where a common hall or walkway connects multiple units.

Every unit should have an (at least) semi-private deck that's large enough for outdoor grilling/dining. Another nice touch is a lockable storage area to put things like skis, bikes, coolers and other outdoor gear.

I'd make sure that some of the units had no steps leading to them and no stairs inside, for those of us getting older.

If they aren't going to do that, then the exchange companies need to indicate that there are stairs inside the units, etc.

I would forbid the use of cheap coffee maker! There is nothing worse than having a coffee maker that doesn't heat the water properly or brew a good cup and have a warming plate that keeps the coffee at the proper temperature.

I especially want good lighting in the kitchen and bath areas....it can be done with efficiency and economy without being dark.

I also long for housekeeping to use fitted sheets instead of flat sheets on the mattress.

Elevators anytime there is more than one floor. It's not so bad during the week, but lugging all the luggage, then groceries, up a couple flights of stairs..................

I would put a BBQ on every unit's deck/balcony. So much more convenient having your own.

Worldmark has a good idea there.
