As far as I know you cannot obtain VIP status with Wyndham thru resale, they changed that a few years ago. That being said it does not mean you got a bad deal. I am sure buying thru retail you paid much less than developer prices and even tho you won't get the VIP perks like size upgrade under certain timeframes and points discounts at last minute bookings, your price per 1K points will certaintly outweigh these benefits. We enjoy our Wyndham ownership even tho the RCI part keeps getting worse. We can still make trades to most places we want to go if we plan it right.
Keep asking any question you have here, there are lots of knowledgeable folks who will give answers and join the Wyndham forum here also.

Resale point should not be counted to qualify VIP. Since in theory, the Sale pays for the VIP benefits. There are times mistake happen, and it get counted. And there could be possible that in the end, that Wyndam did not actually paid any of the benefits. If that is the case, either there will be no VIP benefit at all, or Everyone bought from resale will get VIP benefit.

As to if you made mistake, you need to look at what you paid and the VIP benefit to decide if you made any.

Most likely, you have travel pattern that use very few VIP benfits at all. And even if you use all the benefits extensively, you may still get better deal in resale. You have to determine yourself.

However, with resale purchase, if you decide later on, you want VIP, you can just sale what you have and walk to Wyndham tell them you want to buy all the points from them and become VIP.

The two previous replies are correct about the VIP status. I have gotten all my Wyndham Timeshares from resale. I have been told that they would not be able to make it VIP. I also was told that I am the very bottom of the barrel when it comes to making reservations, but I have not had any problems with getting a location as long as I book it a couple of months before and it's not a prime time. I'm not very concerned about using RCI or II because there are plenty of places that are Wyndham's that I can go to and not lose anything with my points. Once you are able to go online with Wyndham and check things out you will find a lot of great reduced rates at places that you might want to check out. We have only been doing this a year but are really happy with it. One word of advise, if you go to an owner's update do not tell them that you bought resale. They will now once they pull your info, but make sure you get your free gift. Last one we went to we were done in 5 minutes and had $50 gift certificates. So I figure it's worth my time. Good luck and have fun.
